My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Large amont of runner-ups;
Ted Williams, Roger Maris, Bobby Hull, Dick Butkus, Bo Jackson, and Jack Dempsey, in no particular order.

Current: Jim Thome (one of the nicest, most genuine ballplayers I have ever had the pleasure of meeting) Saw him play in 1991 when he was with Canton-Akron Vs. Hagerstown Suns. The Indians farm team was staying at the same hotel we were at. We went to a game, saw him swing the bat and was hooked. Chatted with him in the hotel lobby later that night. I met him again a few years later when he was up with the big team, he was semi-regular but was sitting agaist lefties (he was pissed!) bumped into him in the parking lot of Kaufman Stadium in KC, shook his hand and wished him well. Since then he's emerged into one of the best sluggers in the game.
Honorable mentions to Muhammed Ali and Kareem
Men: Stefan Edberg (tennis), Don Mattingly, Jim Abbott, Juergen Klinsmann (Soccer), Claudio Reyna (soccer), Arnold Schwarzenegger (body building), Christopher Reeve (equestrian, etc)
I see some of you choosing athletes not just based on their athletic notoriety, but a number of you had some really positive experiences with some of them.

It is with this statement that I say that Walter Payton is my abolsute favorite. Not only was he a great player, but he was an even better person. What he did for family and kids is unsurpassed. He even stated that he wanted to be remembered not as the one who broke all the records, but the one that helped others.
Currently, I would say that Jim Thome is tough to beat. Just a great guy to be around, I'm sure.
Remember these Chuck Norris Facts
1. When Chuck Norris does a pushup, he isn't lifting himself up, he's pushing the Earth down
2. According to Einstein's theory of relativity, Chuck Norris can actually roundhouse kick you yesterday
3. There are no such things as lesbians, just women who have not yet met Chuck Norris

<< <i>I think you must've combined the Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson votes, because I count Magic with 4 votes... >>
Magic Johnson's parents live less than a mile from me just outside of Lansing, Mich., he visits the area a few times a year and
you can always tell when Magic is back in town seeing his parents as the driveway and road is jammed with the parked cars of Magic's
local friends stopping by for a visit. Driving by we say "well, it looks like Magic is back in town".
