Is this legit?

Bill Russell Rookie

When I asked about the card being authentic and unaltered I got this response.

<< <i>HI.. I have had the card since the kids big brother who stole my bike gave them to me instead of beating me up.. All of them were on the shelf at my mom's house in a box until I moved them in 1992 when my son put thin cellophane sleeves on them and then into a heavier plastic sleeve.. There are around 100 in all from the same year, and lots more from around that time too as I started to collect then got tired of it so the possibility that any of them have ever been tampered with is virtually impossible....Unless.... Tampering was common back in the 50's.. I have taken a few of them to local card shops and the people there said the quality was great but due to the economy could not make any offers for them.. Hope this answers your question.. >>

The card looks to be authentic, but the description reads like a savy card collector wrote it and then knew enough to use a ruler to give scale and show it is not trimmed. He also has 3 lesser cards from the set up at the same time. I asked early on if he would sell outright and he said the price guide shows $600-$1000 so he would end early for $800. I passed needless to say. Also note his no returns policy.

So is this card legit? I know this is a card that is best bought slabbed, but they seldom show up.

  • I always go with my gut feeling - story sounds a little to good to me and combined with a no return policy I would pass.
  • I had been watching another 57 Russell on ebay. The seller had mistakenly spelled the last name Russel so I was hoping
to catch a bargain. After reading your post I checked the item for any action. The auction had ended early and the card was relisted
with the correct spelling. There goes my bargain.
  • It's real, and this inexperienced seller is just overly cautious. I would bid, PSA 3 potential.

Thanks for bringing this auction to my attention Allen. I am going to bid very high on it...just kidding image

Honestly though, for the right price, I think it's worth taking a shot. Looks to be legit.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

This part of the story just sounds too false... "I have taken a few of them to local card shops and the people there said the quality was great but due to the economy could not make any offers for them"

Any local card shop should be able to pony up for at least a stupid offer (e.g. something like 50% of Ebay value)...and that part of the story in and of itself would scare me away.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • At this point, the bid is high enough that it's not worth the risk anymore.
