That's a hell of a coin. Now all they need to do is create a dollar version and circulate that sucker. image
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

They're due out in May for mother's day.

This is a big step up compared with the other 3 FirstHags.
    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!
  • That is a nice looking coin. Anyone think that the addition of the first lady coins will draw more women to numismatics? If it does, they are a very powerful purchasing demographic that has been historically absent from our chosen hobby.
  • How much are these suckers gonna cost? This ones gonna be a profit maker I bet.
  • If it's like my first lady, they cost more and more everyday you keep them.

I do think it may draw additional collectors to the maket, maybe mine won't yell so much when I buy something.

    I see, this will suck.

I thought they would do like they are doing with the quarters, one every three months.

I was thinking that there would only be a three month window to buy a certain coin.

It does appear that they will release ALL the Hags at once, in May, and thus sell them ALL year.

I think, if this is true, we/they/everyone will see the mintages. The hope that there will be a super rare one, I think, has gone away.

They will mint them to demand. Thus, this beautiful lady will have a high mintage, thus diminishing what she could have been. image

If these were half-ounce silver $10 coins my wife would buy the set. However, she would never spend $350 and up for gold.

She will be getting the corresponding medal set.

  • Much talk of mintages and profits these days and the affection for the coin is dilluted.

This 3rd Presidency 1/2 OZ. gold coin is a beauty and her appeal, to me, is grand regardless of any factors. I will own her if none other.

  • It would be cool if they'd put Sally Hemings on one...

That is an attractive portrait of Martha Skelton, although it strongly resembles the portrait of Liberty that was popular with coinage around the Jefferson era.

Wonder if Sally Hemings will end up on coin? She had a relationship with the president that lasted much longer than Ms. Skelton's relationship did.

Who is going to be featured as James Buchanan's first lady? If I recall, president Buchanan was the only bachelor president and presumeably a closet homosexual.

Is it Martha Skelton? I was also struck by the similarity to the Draped Bust coins. usmint.gov's First Spouse page calls it "Jefferson's Liberty" and says it was designed by Robert Scot.

I just assumed it was Martha Skelton, but that would explain why the portrait strongly resembled Liberty.

  • It's lady liberty. There is info on it in another thread. Yes same image as that of the Draped Bust of the President's era.

  • I wonder how many people will pony up $350 for a coin with Benjamin Harrison's wife on it. Could any of these have the potential to sell in even smaller numbers than the W platinums?
  • My first thought was, it's a shame they passed up a legitimate reason to put an African-American woman on a coin. After all, Martha died long before his presidency, so could never have been considered "First Lady", yet Sally Hemings was his mistress during his term and for years afterward. There are no surviving portraits of her, but she is described as "mighty near white. . . very handsome, long straight hair down her back", "light colored and decidedly good looking."

But after reading up on the subject, I find that Jefferson supposedly denied the relationship in his private correspondence, and DNA evidence has not been conclusive. The Mint has rightly avoided starting a never-ending controversy.

On the other hand, when they get to the Jackie Kennedy coins, they better ramp up for a global sellout!

I have a funny feeling this series won't make it to completion for some reason. Just a gut feeling.

Some of the questions will be, what will the aftermarket look like? Will there be low mintages? Fast sell-outs? Numbers of ultimate collectors?
We are seeing the platinum coin market taking off with a growing collector base. The Spouse coins will be comparatively more affordable, but the designs may not be as attractive.
It will be fun to speculate on the answers, and then perhaps speculate on the coins. image

Depending on what type of mintages they are planning on these, this Jefferson coin could be a quick sell out.....

A large chunk of cash for these coins however.....

Yes, for sure -- unless the Mint imposes tight mintage limits. Then a lot of people who had zero interest in it will mortgage their house to buy as many as they can.

I think it's too early to say that. A large part of this collector base are speculators here on these boards.
