Would You Buy From This Dealer?

Barry Stuppler.

I searched in the archive and found some threads which reference the dealer; and they seem cryptic. Something about a lawsuit, ANA and who knows what else. I couldn't tell if the dealer was the "good guy" or the "bad guy".

I do see they have some nice top end desireable stuff in top TPG slabs. The pictures all seem a little enhanced maybe but I'm not sure.

Just looking for your opinion.
Thanks,
Richard

    If he was selling something I wanted, I would go out of my way to buy from him. He stood up for this hobby and collectors in the face of very real risk.

    Barry specializes in consumer protection;
    and is a long-time rare coin dealer.

    I've known Barry at least 35 years -
    without a doubt one of the "good guys".

    Yep. I would. I'm still kicking myself for not buying a really nice 1874 three dollar gold in PCGS AU-58 he had a couple years ago for $1495. Ouch! image

    He often has some of the nicest Morgans out there. I personally don't care for the eBay marketing of them, but I don't see anything really wrong with him as a dealer nor his coins. Haven't bought from him, but I see no reason why I wouldn't sometime in the future if he had the right coin for the right price.

    I hate to tell you this, but the average collector doesn't give a crap about the PNG. It's a good old boy's club of rich back slappers.

  • 3 or 4 years ago Berry and I made a deal for (10) $20 Gold St. I was buying . When the coins arived (nice OK coins) There was a problem with the delivery charges . He looked up our deal and said OK I did say S&H&INS included and sent me a fast check . Seems like a man of his word.

    This average working coin collector was once suspended from eBay by mentioning Barry Stuppler's name on the eBay coin chat forum. I enjoyed my one lengthy conversation with him in person (at the Milwaukee 2004 CSNS show), which ended by Barry saying he doesn't sell the coins I collect. I interpreted that as him saying that he doesn't wish to spend his time on the coins I can afford.

    I could go on and on about his work in the ANA's legal defense fund, his involvement in the ACG hearings at the Charlotte ANA convention, his ads in the Numismatist, the PNG surveys about grading companies, and so on. Suffice to say that he is an honest and successful dealer. With success, he has to limit his attention to the small minority of collectors who can afford his inventory, despite all his noble intentions to rid the hobby of those who perpetrate scams on those who can't afford the coins he sells.

    I will never have the funds to become a favorite customer of PNG dealers, but Barry Stuppler seems to be a well-intentioned rich guy who doesn't mind the occasional schmooze with an impecunious and fanatical collector such as myself. I recommend him if you can afford his wares. He loves coin collecting and shares my passion of the most inveterate coin collectors, even though his wares are usually out of the price range of most collectors whose cause he champions.
