How much are Waitangi crowns selling for?

I'm looking for a 1935 NZ Waitangi crown in AU to MS62, and I see one in the upcoming Stacks auction.

What are these selling for these days? BTW, I'm not interested in proofs.

Wow! Not an inexpensive coin... I believe the 1930's example runs approx. $2000 to $4000 dollars-obviously less at the high end if you aren't interested in a proof.

I think you have to assume $4k as these have gone for above 2k pounds sterling. They did have high survival rate but retain a certain popularity and the market in Aussie plus to some degree NZ material is rather buoyant.

$4 grand?! Oy gewalt-- I'd best look for one in VF to EF. image I only applied for a credit limit of $2,500 for the Stacks auction because I didn't know a Waitangi would be offered.

do these even exist in circulated grades? Every one I have seen has been PL or PR, and the average grade has been 63+.

I've seen one in EF before (at least the scan made it look EF). Didn't cacheman inquire on a circulated one from a seller in Japan? This is one of those coins that is so rare a few grade points don't make much of a difference in price.

Wait until a 67 comes to market!

No, have not seen this with any circulation - hairlines maybe and a little bit of cabinet friction. No pocket pieces (hey that sounds rude)...

    Best guess estimates:

    AU-50: $1200
    AU-58: $1800
    MS-62: $2800
    MS-65: $4000+

Don't show up very often in circulated condition.

    A wonderful coin!

Yea, verily. While blast white coins are nice, too, I like the mottled look of this one.

I would have imagined the values to be closer together, as in the case of the 1903-O Morgan dollar. When I looked at getting one of the latter to add to a collection of "has been" rarities, I was surprised to see less than a $100 spread between a VF and MS63.

Would it be fair to say hypothetical Waitangi values may be as follows?

    EF: $1,600
    AU: $1,800
    MS60: $2,200
    MS63: $2,500

I've only been following NZ for a few years, but I'd say if you can get the Stacks coin or another example in choice UNC for $2,500, you've done well!

Sometimes these will go cheaper in "fish out of water" sales, where the auction material is oriented toward different coins - even in London some of the auctions will see them go cheaper. Although I like Heritage sales, they are not always the place to pick up bargains! Keep looking, and one may show up in your price range.

Actually, if so, a fair price - was that with the commission? Shiro, do you know the prices from the Ponterio sale?

I think it was. I didn't follow the Ponterio auction. Was there a Waitangi in that auction, too?

Thanks, but I only collect business strikes for my George V collection. I think I'm going to have to start a coin account and save, save, save.

The Ponterio Waitangi (which I thought may have been the nicest of the three) only went for $2,900.
