FIRST STRIKE W Platinum Uncircs ....... Yeah! I know!

I'm dreading this already but since PCGS started it!.........

Does this mean that ALL W Uncirc Plats qualify for the
First Strike designation? I just can't wait for the
"Official PCGS W Platinum Submission Rules" now. image

The way I look at it with such low mintages they are now always will be "first Strikes"

Now are or were they struck from old proof dies or new Unc. dies???

The "official rules" were needed on the ASE and AGE anniversary sets because those same coins were sold outside the sets. They actually had two first strike periods--January when they were first released and then again with the anniversary sets.

Since this condiditon doesn't exist with the current Au and Pt coins, there are no special rules needed. I assume the normal 30 day time period will apply. These are different coins with a W mintmark and other slight differences as pointed out on the mint website.

Those selling sealed boxes on ebay or afraid to open their boxes once recieved are understandably confused.

Jerry, I will pay a premium for mint sealed boxes anyday, regardless of First Strike issues, so I know the coin's I'm buying haven't been cherry-picked.

    Can't argue with that!

Doesn't the Mint employees cherry pick them to place in the sets? image
  • If I'm submitting these things, I assume its $30/coin for Regular plus $10/coin for the FS designation?

I wouldn't go with FS. But the question begs, did the mint even use more than one die for < 3000 coins?

And yet they could be bad, too. Kinda ironic.

  • This is the email reply I got from customer service today. Fedex just brought my one 4 coin set this morning. I'm seriously considering sending in for FS.

We are doing First Strike for the recently-released Uncirculated W coins. (MS only—not Proof). None of the Mint packaging is required; just send the coins in their capsules. The cutoff date for First Strike is January 13th. Which means your package to us needs to be postmarked no later than Jan. 13th. The coins can either receive First Strike or the 10th Anniversary Label, not both and it is a $10 fee for either one of the labels.

From the Mint: 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz.

The coins have a finish similar to their bullion coin counterparts and are available in four sizes--one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce, as well as a four-coin set which contains one coin in each denomination. Each coin bears the “W” mint mark reflecting its striking at the United States Mint at West Point.

  • So, the first strike is for both platinum and gold unc. 2006-W or just the platinum?

Any way you look at it, all of them are going to be among the first 5,000 coins struck for thier respective series.

    Understand. That's a good point.
  • I sent my email concern the Platinum Unc series only. I did not say anything about the gold in my email to PCGS.

The mint has stated in a previous press release that for silver proof dies, the dies are used to strike only about six hundred coins per set. Given the fact that platinum is considerably tougher to coin than silver and requires up to 9-10 strikes to bring up the details, the platimnum dies sets probably only last for 100-150 coins per set.

<< <i>So, the first strike is for both platinum and gold unc. 2006-W or just the platinum? >>

I spoke with a CSR about an hour ago and the FS™ or 10th Anniv. choice applies only to the MS W-Plats. I ask specifically about the fractional MS W-Golds, and she said they would not offer either for these gold coins (obviously, the 10th Anniversary designation would not apply to the Gold fractional Eagles anyway).

Eck. May be they will change their mind in another week or two. Heck, initially, they were not going to do FS on the plats. Now they are. I don't see why they shouldn't for the gold fractionals with the W. They've NEVER been made before and I think that's worthy of some designation.
  • So what would be the best label FS or 10 ANV any thoughts

  • << <i>So what would be the best label FS or 10 ANV any thoughts >>

I would say FS since the mint will be introducing the 10th Ann. next year
