Another Reason why Old Yankee Stadium should not be dismantled

Here is a link to a neat story Yankee Tale

It would truely be something for the kids to see Yankee Stadium after reading that book. It will only add to the mystique even more. Imagine the kids reading about room 107, the place where Gehrig went to sit and rest, meditate and to be alone not knowing the thing that was bothering him. All along, while his bones were crushing in on themselves, he kept playing thinking he just needed to push harder and that was it. What a gamer! He found out at the very end about his diagnosis: ALS. He must have played through hundreds of games while the deterioration of his body was progressing. All that while no one having a clue, not even himself, about what was really going on. That was room 107.

I see Yankee Stadium like all other monuments such as the Coliseum at Rome, Olympic Stadium in Berlin, or any other structure of historic value. Just hearing about it is fascinating, but actually getting a chance to see it is inspiring. Kids need these tales, legends, historical accounts and the object that brings it some reality.

Sad to know the house that Ruth built and Mattingly maintained will be no more. I can understand building another stadium, but to demolish a historical piece makes little sense. I would really be curious to see what the Yankee fans feel about it and the residents of NY.

I was glad to see Germany preserve their Olympic Stadium and even use it for the World Cup! The stadium in which Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals! I do not have to get into the implications of that feat in that era of world history do I?

As of now I have no intentions on ever setting foot inside the new stadium once it is complete.

Yankee stadium is indeed a historic building. I understand the need for improvements, modernization, etc. but there seems like there should be a better way than just tearing down the old and building the new.

    Good stuff!

Yankee Stadium as it is now is not anything like the old stadium was. The real signifigance now IMO is the actual field. Although home plate is pretty far from where it was pre 1976 ...

I will definately visit the new stadium as soon as I can when it opens. image

I really think the second the fans walk into the new park they will fall in love with it seeing how much bigger and wider everything is with vastly improved bathroom facilities and everyhting else that I am forgetting. Not to mention the striking resemblence with the original stadium. I totaly understand the nostalgia/historic point of it all though. I was never at the original ballpark. My first game was in August 1976 the year the stadium re-opened after the major rennovation.

This is the first time I am seeing some fans feeling the same way I do about old Yankee Stadium. I am not by any means a person who thinks "the good old days, blah blah blah" I believe every generation has the right to leave their mark, but at the same time to appreciate the history.

Sometimes what goes on in the name of progress is not really progress even though chronologically it happens after the current. Stay with me on this. Adding more luxury box seats and eliminating some bleachers is not any more progress than the other way around. It is merely catering to the sensibilities of someone in charge. Catering to the whims of a few individuals is not progress.

Someone must have done the math and determined someone will get rich with this new plan. It is money driven. Just because something is money driven does not mean it is better for the people or that new technology is being applied where it couldn't in the old stadium.

The new stadium will look the same, be in the same neighborhood and have the same name. Big whoop! What's the point of it all.

You tell me that walking down the hallways down the right field line and left field line don't drive you nuts? They have to be 14 feet wide if that. The new Stadium will have cavernous walkways inside the stadium. Maybe I am just getting old but it is NOT FUN going to Yankee Stadium with a wife and young kids in tow. Those tiny hallways become the running of the bulls when the game lets out. But that is just the biggest thing I personally am excited about ...... again, Yankees Stadium now is NOTHING like the old park. The old park was dismantled right down to the ground almost except for some unseen structural items. The field was even lowered and home plate was about where the first row of seats are now behind the present one. This is not the Stadium Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, or any other all time great Yankee played in.

I personally can't wait for the new place image

Edited to say that the new stadium will resemble the original park, not the one standing since 1976.

    Dan,

If there is one thing I cant stand about the stadium now it definately isnt the hallways.

What drives me nuts is the new breed of " fans " that are at the games. The Manhattan suits who show up in the 3rd inning and leave in the 7th. You know exactly the ones I am talking about. They arent the true fans. They only show up because they get the tix free from their companies and it is the " in " thing to do and the place to be.

Just watch highlights of the division series in 95 through the ALCS and WS of say '99 or 2000 and compare the crowd to that which has been at games the past year or two.

The place isnt the same, the fans arent the same, the intensity isnt the same, and the new ballpark will only breed an even worse group in my opinion.

    Bri,

I was at the Stadium for that 95 series vs the M's. and at various playoff games after 2000. You are absolutley right. I suppose that success will do that. This is a debate of a much different nature .... one that I agree with you 100%. As far as the stadium itself goes? I look forward to the new park.

I noticed that during the playoffs, the Yankees crowd did not seem to be particularly knowledgable based on their reactions to game events. I know the Yankess have some of the most dedicated and knowledgable fans around, so I found this pretty odd. I guess bri's post explains it.
