Here is a good reason for Private Auction Listings

I have now been told by two different people that they have received a "Second Chance Offering" for one of my auctions. It looks like the scammer is just going down my bidder list.

At least these two people knew enough that it was bogus but I sure hope the other bidders don't fall for the scam.

Larry, be sure to put into your description that you
don't do second chance offers and to report them
immediately if they get one.

I've had that happen to me and got e-mailed by runners
up wondering if I had duplicates! Added that verbage and
the problem seems to have gone away.

Where, within eBay's selling page, etc. can you set up private auctions?

It's good to say you don't do second chances. If you go private you lose bids from those like myself who refuse to bid on any auction that hides bidder identities, no matter how desirable we find the item to be. I make no apologies and no exceptions to that rule.

After a lot of though and the at the risk of maybe losing a bidder or two, I am going back to using private auction listings again on my more expensive items. Items with prices that would attract a scam artist. At least this way I am the more accessible target rather than those who bid on my sales.

My main reasoning being that since you never can tell who you are bidding against anyway what difference does it make if other bidders can see who the competition is?

You don't know who you are bidding against on Teletrade, wether or not it's a reserve or another bidder. You can't tell who you are bidding against at Heritage or Superior. Even if you are on the auction floor at the time of the sale you don't know who you are bidding against. Mail bids force you to bid the maximum that you are willing pay and will be the price you pay even if the next bid is no where near yours.

As far as shilling goes, if you don't bid more than you think the coin is worth to you then you shouldn't have a problem. If you don't think there is shilling at other auction venues you are mistaken. I have worked for auction houses and can tell you that even the auctioneer is working a game with your bids.

While you may be right technically, the perception of ebay is different than that of Heritage, or Teletrade and for many people private = scam, particularly on expensive items.

For what it's worth, my opinion is that stating that you don't take 2nd chance offers but keeping your auctions public is the best way to ensure healthy bidding on your items.

Private auctions = pass. No exceptions.

Be careful about moving all your auctions private. I did so for the very reasons you stated. I ended up hurting my sales. There are a lot of bidders that will avoid a private auction. I tested this for a few weeks, running both private and public at the same time. The public auctions definately got more action. I have given up on private auctions now. However, I did add verbage to all my listings stating that I do not send out 2nd chance offers. That seems to be enough.

For the record, I will not give a second thought to any auction with the private auction option enacted. I totally understand your thought process and all points are valid, however, it's not the same on Ebay and I do look at the bidders to see if there is any shill bidding going on.
