What Should I do With this to Crack or not to Crack

I am thinking of bidding on this and if I win it not sure if the crack head in me can keep it sealed .

If this was yours what would you do with it?

This would be my most expensive crack yet Would the High be worth it?

I cracked something similar [before pack grading was born...] and it was the stupidest thing I've ever done.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I would rip it. How often will you get opportunity again?

In the words of Devo: "Rip it, rip it good!"
  • Leave it sealed. GAI has had many questionable situations reguarding pack grading in the past. Corner looks ripped. Are corners exposed? Someone try to peek at cards? I would leave it sealed unless you can afford that gamble.

  • I just hope the enjoyment of doing it is worth the negative expected value of like $4-5k from opening it...

Imagine buying that and just staring at it?? Imagine the adrenaline rushing through you as you crack it and open it up. Let's you know that you are alive. You only live once. Rip it open!!!

well its pretty even on the vote tally so far. just think what your gut would do when you rip it and find out its all junk that would grade out at a 4. the value in the item is at its current state. if you want one to rip i think you would be better off finding one thats not graded. just think if you get junk you couldnt complain that GAI graded a resealed pack. plus the price should be cheaper.

    What's it gonna cost you?
  • sagardsagard Posts: 1,901 ✭✭✭
Unless $5K to you is like $50 to someone with a $100,000 income please don't do it.

If you do decide to do it PLEASE get out the video camera and make a movie. Practice with some '89 Fleer so we all can get a quality movie out of the deal.

Opening that beauty and showing the movie via YouTube is a no brainer. Also if there is any issue with it being a reseal you want all the evidence possible to discuss the matter with GAI.
  • Cost = $7,800 BIN from Mark Murphy. I don't like the look of the bottom left corner on the back of the pack.
  • julen23julen23 Posts: 4,558 ✭✭
i ABSOLUTELY would NOT do it.

drink a couple of gin martinis (extra dry) and you can easily achieve the same desired affect.

Oops, I misread your original post. I thought you already had it, not currently bidding.

I recant my vote and have edited my original post.

While it is in an 8 holder, those corners look a tad worn for my taste and not worth the risk.

  • Well the money isnt an issue here and I dont expect to open it and make any money. I've just always dreamed about owning and maybe ripping one of these packs. Just the thought of it gets me excited. I just cant decide if i want it to have in my collection for a see what i got or to rip it and be able to say oh yeah i 've riped one of those? Plus how often do you see one of these for sale graded or not.

If money is not an issue, I know exactly what I would do. I would buy it and and wait until I could find another, then buy it. Once you have two, then open one, and keep the other.

Crack it! I bought a box about ten years ago and sold off 22 packs - I cracked the other two. What I found was:

    First series pack
Gum had 50 years to eat the cards
    Lots of o/c

    WAS VERY COOL

A guy called me up and bought a dozen for a party he was having as favors!!! image His guests were going to open them up together.

That kind of wax is for buying and selling.

    Very bad gamble.

    Devil's advocate time:

Around 1995? - a guy bought a wax pack and pulled an Andy Pafko which he sent to PSA and came back a 10! He sold that card for close to 100K!

When Murphy was selling those pristine packs from the 8 pack cellos, I should have picked one up.

Open it? Not worth it IMO.

If money isn't an issue, go for it. Just please document the hell out of it. Hundreds of us would like to do it vicariously.
  • If money is no object, absolutely go for it.

Document it, put it up on youtube. It'd be an amazing video.

  • I won a 1955 Topps Gai 3.5 Nickel pack for about $400.00 It had High numbers noted on the outside of the graded pack when I received it I decided to open the pack. Inside there were 9 cards and these were the nine and the condition of the cards. Don Zimmer completely garbage, Steve Kraley off center and stained, Mel Parnell off center maybe 8oc, Russ Kemmer Junk, Steve Bilko Junk, And here were the last four that I sent into psa Johnny Podres 8oc, Camilo Pasqual 8oc, Harmon Killebrew 8oc, and Tom Hurd 8oc. All cards were off center and all had print on them and not one card from the high series as noted on the graded pack. I sold all the graded cards and the wrapper and still lost money. The point of the story is leave the pack sealed and alone do not open it the value is in the sealed pack. And by the way I still own the 5 ungraded cards to remind me to never open a vintage pack again. I guess this pack was from the alan rosen tennesee find a while ago.
  • The wrapper condition on the back is even worse.

I never did get an answer a while back when I asked about the 52 wax box (plus a few packs) that was sold at an auction then re-sold a very short time later. I wonder if this pack has anything to do with that?

Does a nickle pack come with 5 cards?

Looks like mice have tried to eat the gum through
the corners. I would neither buy it, nor crack it.

If you're looking at it from an investment perspective,
it will be worth much more in 5-10 years.

A bunch of clowns with more money than brains will continue to
crack the few remaining unopened packs, and yours will now
    be much more valuable.

Buy it, put it away, and sell it down the road for a profit.
Then use the money to buy some pristine 1952's already graded.
    Nate
  • Is that a faint "---tle" showing through the wrapper?

Seriously, if it's your dream to rip a 52 pack, and you can afford it, then you should do it. If you're a true junkie you can't stick it in a closet - it'll drive you nuts.

  • I want you to crack that sucker so bad, I'm the one that's going nuts, lol.
  • DEAL OR NO DEAL!!!

I say forget cracking it and sell it, don't be dissapointed if they are all commons!

I bet that pack is worth more unopened than getting a bunch of commons in PSA 8.

If it were me, I'd cross it over to a PSA holder and keep it.... but thats just me!.

  • Well I found a ungraded 52 Pack for 3300 Think I will go this route. I think it looks better then the gai8 . Thanks for all the comments after some thought most of you were right that is a pretty ugly looking gai 8. Think I'll take my chances with a ungraded and since it looks like the rips have it. I am definatly going to rip itimage
I guess I'll have to figure out how to use that youtube so I can upload the video when i rip that sucker .
  • $3300 is a good deal especially if Mark Murphy is really paying his listed buy price of $5000. Good luck with the pack.
  • flatfoot816flatfoot816 Posts: 2,194 ✭✭✭
YES, $3,300 IS A great DEAL--IF IT'S REAL!! Recall that the pack that held the Pafko several years back was sold for $1,000 and the buyer thought about it for 3-4 months before buying it. Turned out to be a pretty good gamble. Go for it Junkie!
  • I'm sure the video could get some press (SCD, Beckett?).

Practice with an 87 Topps pack to get the look and feel of it. Everyone would love to see it opened slowly, undoing the back folds, opening it up, turning the cards over. We see a 54 year old piece of gum, then slowly going through the cards one by one, building anticipation. Focusing tightly just on the pack and cards. That would be great.

    Best of luck!!
