Another year ending...

What was your greatest card collecting achievement for the year 2006? Examples include

-A card you finally got after years of searching
-Some milestone in the completion of your set (50%, 75%, 100%)
-Starting a set
-Getting a certain autograph

It could even be achievements like...

-Not buying from Ebay for 6 months straight
-Selling off a part of your collection to...
::fund another part of your collection
::to pay your electricity bills
::to appease your significant other

It's time to reflect back and really think about how much money we've spent on pieces of cardboards with pictures of dead guys (pre and post war) or millionaire athletes (modern) on them....and try to make meaning out of it. Tis the season...

Mine was to sell off one of my modern sets to focus/fund on T206. With regard to your last paragraph, I was thinking about the same thing yesterday. I was thinking of people paying upwards of $200K for cards of Wagner and Mantle and thinking to myself, wow...we're really, really crazy! In my area, you can have a pretty darn nice looking house for $200K. I'm worried that someday these thoughts of 'why' we collect will win out and I'll sell off my collection again. I try to keep those thoughts submerged under the surface, though!
  • Sold off 99% of my childhood 60's Topps Hockey and Baseball. Using the cash for prewar HOF's, before the supply dries or I'm priced out .
  • I started on the T206 set this year....I'm up to about 5% of the set....another 30 years I'll have it all sewn up image

    The collection highlights for 2006?

Sold off my PSA 9 OJ Simpson rookie for big bucks (to me at least) and used the proceeds to locate and aquire SF Giants cards from 1959 - 1980 to nearly finish off my run of SF Giant team sets, including landing NM (or better) copies of Giants HoFers Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal, and Gaylord Perry.

Used Sportlots.com to finally put all of my incomplete 1980s and early 90s sets to bed.
    My Giants collection want list

WTB: 2001 Leaf Rookies & Stars Longevity: Ryan Jensen #/25
  • If I can get the rest of my bills taken care of, it would be quite the accomplishment to make additions to my collection and owe nothing at the close of the year.

I think mine would be starting my Gaylord Perry set. I have really enjoyed building this set because it kept me focused on one thing. I think I am going to do HOF player sets for a while.

I would have to say getting this card for my Emmitt set. Its rated an 8 on the set and just a flat out great card.

I spent most of the year worrying about the renovations to my house and scrapping for loans to cover it. I don't think I bought a single card of any significance in 2006 image

This was an interesting card year here. I moved a number of sets over the 1/2 way mark and started a few unexpectedly. I'm hoping 2007 is the year of completion for most of these.

Dammit Matt! I don't need to start another auto set! That is a great looking design

Sticking to my plan and not spending any money for one year.

I bought my first two T3s recently - and those are the major purchases for the next year.

    Merry Christmas

I finished the 2 graded football sets I've seen building since 2002: 1989 Score PSA 10 and 1962 Fleer PSA 8.

    Great topic..

Hands down this sheet of lined paper signed by Terry Sawchuk and Ron Stewart. I got it from Sean in exchange for making quite a few cards for his collection. It was up for auction years ago on eBay and I was bidding on it but my lack of collecting funds at the time forced me to bow out of bidding. I never thought I would see it again but Sean came along wanting me to create cards out of his spectacular autograph collection for him.

There are other Sawchuk's out there but this one is special being the very first one I found and went after.. for it being so nicely signed.. and the tragic story behind the two players.

Sorry Matt! Here is another one for you. I really like these alot!

  • thanks for the replies, guys. I guess to answer my own question...

My "achievement" was finally getting an affordable, sharp looking 1954 johnston cookies hank aaron. For the past two years, everytime that card went up for auction (which was not as frequently as one would think), i would get grossly outbid. This time, i got lucky....and got a GAI 6 for a reasonable price.

Of course, the downside to this is that a PSA 6 card came up for auction a few months later....and went for $75 cheaper!

    Congratulations MD

If things go well in the spring - mine would be an affordable T3 Cobb.

All my best in the next year! Merry Christmas

I had a very good 2006...started and completed my Don Drysdale & Sandy Koufax player sets, pushed both my '84 Donruss and '72 Topps baseball sets to near completion and have started to get the plans together for my 2007 project of the "Rookies of the '70s" registry set. Should be another great year in 2007! image

I sold a large number of duplicate cards this year and LOVED it. Hoping to sell more next year. NOT getting out of collecting but am planning to focus more in '07!

Matt - Those two Emmitt's are both beauties!

I made it to #1 in the Terry Bradshaw master set and got the certificate to prove it! Knocked out the guy that had won it the 3 previous years. That was my major collecting accomplishment for the year.

I guess the best would be deciding how to make collecting GBrett more interesting. I've started collecting him in SGC holders. It makes it more of a challenge, just because there aren't a huge amount available, and I don't have to fight the Brett PSA registry guys.
Yeah, I uploaded that KC icon in 2001

Not really a collecting achievement per se, but I finally got my eBay Green Star (5000+ feedbacks).

i had no major collecting achievements this year, as my intention was to move as much product as possible, the life of an eBay seller

proud to say how grateful i am for the Registry and its members, and i hope i've helped some of you get closer to the finish line. i appreciate the support and wish you all the very best Holiday season and a successful 2007

    THANK YOU!! image
  • I finished my Fran Tarkenton chase 62 thru 79 in all psa 8's or 9's. (All but the 62, I have it in a psa 7).

Sold my 1972 football set in PSA 8 (almost six cards short) for $5700. That was to fund the friggin woodchuck that ate my woodwork on my new windows.

After griping to my insurance we worked out a deal and I got $3,000 from them. Got to fix the whole lot of windows for just under four large. I now have $4700 to spend on my all time Packers set.

I bought a raw Clark Hinkle 1935 which is in transit to PSA (should get a four but hoping for the best)

I will now focus on Favre's basic set which I accidentily deleted three weeks ago so I gotta start all over again.

    Happy New Year to all.

PS - I did not find the woodchuck yet

Seeing my Redbirds win the Series - something that I never saw growing up in the 1970s.

    Something that I actually did:
Completing the 1972 Topps BB in solid EXMT or better condition - on a budget no less.
  • Wow...its been a pretty good year for this Hockey Card Collecter......I was able to snag a Gem Mint PSA 10 71/72 OPC Ken Dryden rookie and just a few days ago, I won a beautiful 1954 Topps Gordie Howe Card...PSA 8........and lots and lots of other stuff this year....I continue to work on building the finest 71/72 opc nhl set.......yeah its been a fine year for this Western Canuck!!

I got back into the hobby this year as well and went from about 40 1969 topps baseball cards to needing only 30ish to finish off the set. I also started a 1969 football set that has a long way to go but im buying the in midgrade raw so it will go by quickly. I also got my first tobacco card, a T218 boxing card of Unk Russell. I have five from that set now so, yes, i will be trying to complete at least the boxing portion of that set as well. My other project is picking away at making a 2006 donruss classics football set. I have enjoyed doing these sets as i have never attempted to put any sets together at any point of my collecting life so finishing any of these will be quite an accomplishment for me.

This has been a great collecting year for me and hopefull the next year will have less sets started and more sets completed(well i guess as long as I complete some it wont matter how many i start).

I got my 1978 Topps set to 100% with a 9.05 GPA. Not "finished" yet as there are a few PSA 8's that I need to upgrade to PSA 9 minimum.

  • Mike,

You cannot and will not be able to make it one year without buying a card.

That is absolutely impossible. It just can't be done. No way. Nope. Just can't do it.

It's like drugs. You can't just stop suddenly if you're already hooked.

    And you are hooked.

    Merry Christmas everyone !!!!!!!!!!!!
