Best Pull of my Adult Life (UPDATED-SCAN OF PSA 9 STAUBACH ROOKIE ADDED TO THREAD)

Well, yesterday I was bored and popped a recently graded PSA 7 1972 Topps FB and pulled this sweet puppy. Dead PSA 9!!!

Yes, partly crazy popping packs I had graded out of the holder, but told myself that the PSA 7 wasn't worth a whole heck of a lot in $$.

Best "insane" decision I have made in a long time!!

You sent your packs in to be graded. Then cracked them and opened them? Seems like we deserved this post months ago. image

    Get that scan working please!

  • Merry christmas, that is a boss card!
  • Card will be mailed out tomorrow with a few others. Should have Grades near the end of the year. I'll pick up the cards and hopefully be able to add a nice picture of a PSA 9 Staubach Rookie to this thread. It would be the 18th PSA 9 graded. A centering toughie Mr. Staubach is.

Tried to do a cartwheel, but my feet hit the office ceiling. Will try one in the living room (higher ceiling) later.

Here are the rest of the high end cards from the two packs. All should be PSA 9's

Wow, nice cards. That pack was only a PSA 7???
  • So you spend money to get the pack graded. Then once you get it back you open it? Then you send the card in the pack off to PSA. Thats a great business model for PSA.

Congrats on your pull. I don't think I'd be brave enough to open that pack.
  • I don't know what is more amazing to me:

    1. pulling a PSA 9 (hopefully) Staubach out of two vintage packs.
    or
    2. Cracking a freshly graded PSA 7 1972 pack in the first place.

By sending the pack to PSA --- you couldn't have planned on ripping it.

Major PROPS ---- I'm impressed with your luck and your balls.

  • Were you able to see the card through the wrapper?

No. If I had, I would not have sent the wax pack in to get graded in the first place.

Congrats! Is this card a keeper or will you be selling at some point?
  • Congrats! Is this card a keeper or will you be selling at some point?

I'm going to sell. I have a very nice offer so far, but I don't believe one has been on ebay for over a half year and with this being so well centered, it might bring some strong bidding. Also, this is only the 6th or 7th PSA 9 graded since May of 2003.

Could get interesting if it hits ebay

what were the other grades from the pack? I saw Alwoth and Liske as 8's

    Congrats!

What did the Alworth grade? If it's a 9, I'm interested in it.

    Steve
  • I did not send in anyother 72's at this time. I sent the Staubach in on an expedited submssion. Will submit the others in due time

Any ways, here it is. Pack fresh, just back from PSA..........

So, by a show of hands, who thinks I should open the last two 1972 Topps FB wax packs (both PSA 8's) that I had graded to complete this run of insanity??

First, thanx for the kind words.

Now, I'm gonna tell the truth - I didn't know anything about the pop or anything on the card.

There are less an 20 9s in about a 1000 graded!!!

    That's incredible!

And the card looks great in the holder!

I guarantee there are people willing to make "arrangements" on this one!

  • What is SMR on that bad boy? More importantly, what have similar offerings brought in the real market?

That is a sweet pull! With that centering I think the sky is the limit.

Besides the HOFers, the McDole, Liske and Nunley are real low pop 9's. 2,3,2 respectively with no 10's on any of them.

    Awesome pack. Awesome.

  • Great card, great story.

Who would have thought you could turn a '72 pack into a PSA 9 Staubach rookie in 10 days!
  • If the other packs were from the same box, open them. Also, make sure that they didn't undergrade that card. Inspect it very closely. It is hard to tell from the scans.

  • Its official, the card is sold to a board member.

Want to point out I opened two packs, one right after the first one, which yielded the Staubach. The cards (McDole. Alworth, etc.) in the scan are the best from two packs.

Zef204 –Thanks for pointing out the low pops, will have to get those in to PSA quickly. They are blazers!

My wife and daughters are off to Carlsbad for the day and night visiting a long time friend of hers. Looks like its me, my cards, the dog and the WAX PACKS……..I’ll be back tonight with scans!!!!

Outstanding pack! Congrats on your luck - as for the other two packs, I'd go for it and open them; even if they yield nothing, the odds of more very high-grade centered cards seem good, and you're likely way ahead with the superb pulls so far.

That's too cool - this run of luck is the kind of thing that will pleasantly stick in your memory for a long time. image

And I agree - Mike brings quite a lot of positivity to the discussions here!

Man, that is one AWESOME card Mark...Congratulations!image

  • It's stories like these that make pack-ripping so much fun. No way I could stand to look at a vintage pack -- slabbed or not.

I guess it's the gambler in me --- but I see a pack and I've gotta rip!!!!!!

    Great stuff and congrats!

    Oh well!
