Advice needed: Which Dectector to Buy

I am on the verge of picking up a decent detector for my son, but, which to buy??
I like the features of the Garrett GTI's, but one post on this thread mentioned the heavy weight of the GTI2500....does anyone know the diff in features and weight of the GTI1500 from the GTI2500?
Also, how do I find out if these things have waterproof coils.....I want to have some versatility to be able to search trickling creeks, etc and maybe get the coil wet/submerged about 3-9 inches.
Anybody care to comment?

I just got a new White's Prizm 2 for my grand kids to use. Cost- $200.00
It should be easy to use. If I ever need to upgrade to a better unit, Then the Prizm 2 will be good for backup.
I have top of the line White's...But I don't think I would start a kid out on them.
