I hate '85 Donruss..................

I collect vintage only but lately I've been going back through my 80's sets and putting them in sleeves. Last week I started going through my '85 Donruss factory set, which I opened as a kid, looked through them once, and then put them back in the factory set box.

Well, guess what. The Clemens rookie is the worst card in the set. O/C top to bottom and a horrible tilt on the right side of the card. UGH, UGH, AND TRIPLE UGH. A few possible PSA 10 candidates with guys like Bobby Grich and Lee Tunnell, but the most important card in the set is horrible. Would be lucky to be a 7. I'm sure I can find one out there but I'm not going to enjoy spending time and money on doing so.

It could have gone my way. Find my opened factory set from childhood. Slowly shuffle throught the cards. Pull out Roger. Oh my god, he's centered. Let's check the corners. Oh my god they are perfect. Let's get him into his rightful place in a CS1. Off to PSA land and dreams of a $800 PSA 10 are dancing in my head.

PSA 7. Doh! I think PSA found what may a 1/8 inch wrinkle on the back. Still not sure even undermagnification. Roger is now safely entombed in a CS1 to the boys in California can take another look.

It most likely is something else, as a surface wrinkle is an automatic 5.

The Clemens RC from the factory sets has this indentation in the upper left of the card that automatically drags the card down to NM. I've probably sent in four or five of these cards that looked Gem and had them all come back as 7's or lower.

FWIW I wouldn't bother sending it back in. Whatever PSA's faults might be, they seem very adept at finding this particular defect.

On the edge or the surface?

As I recall it's on the edge near the surface, and is sometimes only visible on the back of the card.

I could be wrong about where exactly it's located-- it's been about two years since I sent one in for grading-- but the larger point is that the grade wasn't a mistake, and it's very unlikely that the card will get bumped upon resubmission. This isn't one of those 'grader must have had a bad day' grades-- although as I recall it does take a while to spot the indentation, as it isn't very consipicuous.

Boo Potts - good call. I just checked mine and it's near the top edge on the left side, kind of close to the center. No doubt that would knock an otherwise gem card down. With mine having the other issues, this one is no better than a 6. ):
