I won the 1978 Topps set........

in the Memory Lane auction. Now I gotta figure out what to do with it. image

I really just threw in what I thought was a low-ball bid. Now, do I break it, work on it, or just enjoy as is for the time being? Does anyone know whose set on the registry it was? I have been unable to determine by going through the sets.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

I'm really kinda tickled never having owned a monster sized PSA set before. image

  • That is a nice set. The 78 is one of my favorite modern sets. If you are looking to protect your investment, I would recommend breaking it up because the pops are bound to rise due to all of the product. However, if you enjoy the set and have the storage space, I would recommend keeping it. If you do decide to break it up, please let me know because I would be interested in some of the cards (e.g., 690, 710, zisk, and others).

    Wondo, CONGRATS!

    I also bid on this wonderful set (i.e., 10K to 15.5K). With a 17.5% buyers' premium to be "tacked-on", 18.2K was my personal ceiling. After my personal bids failed, I tried to participate, and get set registarants to participate in a "group bid". My idea was having 10 participants putting-up $2,100 each, but not enough interest;

(plus its XMAS time, and funds are tuff, this time of the year, as "kids and wives" are more important than baseball cards, I just don't understand it? image ) as most PSA 1978 set-builders, they seem to be satisfied with just building their sets with, PSA 9s and PSA 8s, and are not really looking to spend that extra cash needed to upgrade to PSA 10s.

There are over 550 PSA 10s, with plenty of lo pops, star cards etc.

There are over 150 PSA 9s

There are many sets registered, but, as I mentioned, most are not into upgrading to PSA 10s. I would say there are 5 or 6 active sets that are pursuing PSA 10s. The rest of the sets are just looking for upgrades in PSA 9s and 8s.

So, common PSA 10s go on ebay for $ 20 to $ 35, Lo Pop PSA 10s may go from $ 25 to $ 50, or more!

Star cards? Well, my guess is 60 to 100% of SMR, depending on the card, and some (like a PSA 10 Jim Palmer or a PSA 9 Ryan, as examples) should easily go much higher than SMR.

The really lo pop PSA 9s? Well, bidding will be healthy, as "many a set builder" will want to upgrade their sets with thes "hard-to-find" items!

Regular common PSA 9s? Go from $ 3 to $ 7, some of the less common PSA 9s, can to from $ 5 to $ 25.

And the key cards (Murray, Molitor, Ryan, etc.), may attract bidders from "outside the 1978 circle", hopefully producing good results for you.

Wondo, I'm always interested in upgrading my set, so you can PM me anytime (or email me at: rbdjr@bellsouth.net) and I can (from commons to low pops!) take some material off your hands, to help u lighten your load a little! Just LMK

Your winning bid is pretty close to what I expected the "final hammer price to be", so you did quite well, in my opinion. With the buyer' premium, figure you paid 70% of SMR. Considering how many of those cards are lo pops, star cards, key cards, etc. You'll be just fine!

Happy Holidays and again, a great win for you!

    Wondo-

Do you keep any of the cards you buy for more than a few months?

I recall you doing something similar with 1969 Topps Super a year or two ago
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

#481 is Jackson Todd. I just looked at the pop report. There are 17 Todd's graded. One PSA 6, the rest higher...image

    Marc,

I usually just "rent" my cards - there are way too many cards out there and not enough $$$ here! image I try to do the "Hobby that pays for itself" thing.

julen, the owner of this set has posted on the 1978 Set Registry thread. And this set has been discussed in length among fellow set registarants' there.

    Happy Holidays!

if you want to break them into need based lots (letting the buyer make their own) myself amongst many others would be interested with you making a profit for your efforts. if interested let me know. i am 55% in psa 9, so i still need 300+ cards.

    thanks

I would be very interested in purchasing the Phillies Team Set less the Schmidt card.

I have received a tremendous amount of correspondence about the set - thank you!

I probably won't take possesion until after Christmas, but I will then put a posting on the BST board and contact everyone for wantlists who has not sent one in yet. Stuff that everybody wants will probably go up on ebay unless it gets packaged with a good chunk of cards (i.e. team sets or bulk purchases).

Thank you, Brian, for putting together such a tremendous set and I hope that I can do justice to the 1978 Topps collecting community.

    Thanks!

While I can't imagine spending $17,000 on a 1978 set, it sure does look nice. This is one of the nicest Molitor/Trammell rookies I've seen. No smudge!

PM sent! We have been watching and speculating on this set for weeks now. So much fun ....

No, that is wrong. What most of the 78 buyers do is make sure that that card inside a 10 holder really looks like a nice 10. They are a very dicriminating group and will not buy a PSA 10 card that has obvious print marks or centering problems. The reason for this? Why spend higher dollars then needed on cards in a set that is so plentiful still and you will have almost certainty of finding a perfect example. Alot of times at a FRACTION of the cost. So satisfied? Not entirely. Patient? Hell yes! image
