YOUCH!

I just got back my first submission... apparently, I don't have a good eye for cleaning.

I sent off my 1776 guinea, which I knew had a die clash on the cheek, but they called it damaged.

I expected one might be problematic... not 5 of 8. image

Got pics? Which company did you use?
  • PCGS.

I'll post the pics when I get them, their images are much better than mine.

This is the guinea - my image, and the color came off a bit funny, but the marks on the cheek are from a clashed die on the reverse that is much easier to spot in hand, and pretty easy in the image. Apparently they felt it was damage.

Two of the cleanings shock me, one I was hedging on myself. One bagged as scratched or rim nick, which I am at a loss on. image

The cheek marks definitely look like clashing to me.

Here's a second thought on it...

Clashing usually occurs on the thinner parts of the planchet correct? If that is true I'd think having heavy clashing on the cheek and nothing in the fields would be somewhat odd. The cheek should be one of the taller parts of the design and also one of the least likely to clash.

Could it be possible that this is some type of counterstrike damage? From another coin of the same type being on top of your coin, reverse touching the obverse of your coin and pressure being applied (by accident or intentional...who knows).

Ouch, man. Sorry to hear the results...

I guess I'll wait to post the grades from ANACS I received today...

    Ricke,
I have had several coins BB recently because of cleaning (Silver and gold) . All of these have come from very reputable auction houses, of course they don't guarantee that the coin will not be considered cleaned by any TPG, particuliar the european auction houses. I have had a few I have returned for credit remember this one .. image... BB for cleaning, lucky me the auction house returned my money... or should I say most of it.
I've basicly made up my mind to buy only TPG gold !!!
