Matt Millen's record with the Lions -- 23-70

Why did this guy get a 5 year contract extension in 2005?

Can anyone make sense out of the Detroit Lions?

Perhaps it is like that movie Major League - the owners have secret ulterior motives and would prefer to lose.

  • Why even try to makes sense of the Fords/Lions? Honestly, have they really made any truly good decisions since drafting Barry in '89? They have the money to spend, but they usually put it in the wrong places. Nearly every noteable free agent signing they have made has turned out to be a bust. Their draft picks have almost always done nothing worth noting. They sign coaches that, with the exception of Mooch, have no experience at head coaching in the NFL. They give extensions for no reason, ala Millen and Batch. Players are injured regularly. They get rid of a guy like Harrington for nothing, then sign 2 losers to replace him who are no better than he was.

Remember the Barry fiasco? I saw an interview with him about a year ago. He basically "didn't deny the fact" that he would have continued to play if the Lions had traded him. The Lions had to have known this. Why not trade the guy for a wad of talent instead of just forcing him into retirement? As long as the Ford Family owns this team, they are destined for failure. I cannot even stand to waste my time watching them anymore. If the owners don't care, why should I?

I hope they don't draft a promising young player this year. I hate seeing potential turn to crap here. At least if they do, I hope they draft some jacka$$ like C. Rogers that deserves to have a lousy career with a crappy team.

The Lions are a pitiful organization and that the way it is. All those early draft picks the past few years and they are still a freaking joke.

The Lions seem to parallel the decline of the Ford Motor Co. Bad decisions all over the place.

Both are in serious trouble but because of revenue sharing William Clay Ford's Lions will probably
    outlive the auto company.

At least Ford Motors was smart enough to bring back the classic Mustang look. The Lions brought back Millen... Ummm... Ahhh... Go Mustangs

  • Some Gal I knew back in the late 80's knew Millen when he attended Penn State and said Millen and the other linebackers would take a cat and bury it leaving the cats head exposed and then would take a gas powered mower and run the cats head right off.

This was motivation? and how would you approach a guy like this and fire his arse

I'm pretty sure that's an urban myth. The exact same story used to circulate around my neighborhood in the early '80's, only the culprit then was the notorious Kellenberger brothers and how they behaved when they were stoned on PCP.

I guess Ford could send a subordinate to do the dirty work of firing Millen while Ford is out of the country if he is truely afraid of him. image

Ford generally stays out of the spotlight, he is certainly not the Jerry Jones type.

This would be the answer... Bury his a$$ (or head, same difference) in the dirt and run over the idiot with a mower image

Yes, I've also heard the story in reference to other people. Millen is a pud wacker, so I doubt he likes shaved puss image

  • I love Barry Sanders, but lets get one thing straight, he screwed the Lions, not the other way around. At least as far as his retirement goes. He had fairly recently signed an extension so he had a very large bonus. The whole bonus would have counted toward the salary cap at once if they traded him. They would have had to cut a whole bunch of guys just to get under the cap. I believe they said at the time it would be like 8 guys. It would have decimated them. Barry had to be aware of this. That being said, you can hardly blame Barry considering the crap the Lions consistently put around him.

As far as Millen goes, how they have not yet gotten rid of him I have absolutely no idea. They are getting what they deserve.
  • The guy is clueless.....he'll be gone by the end of January.

I cannot remember the specifics as it's been quite a while since it all happened, but the signing bonus would have counted against the cap for one year to the tune of around 6-7 million. Even at that time, you wouldn't have to move many players around, if any. The big possibility would have been to restructure a few of the existing contracts to accommodate the extra money to remain under the cap. Further, you could have easily moved this guy for some good, young talent that wouldn't cost you much. If the players didn't pan out, it was a risk worth taking as in the end you got nothing anyways. But if they turned into quality players, you get production out of the trade.

You are basing that on the brilliant moves the Lions have made in the past? image

Actually, I hope you are right but this is the same team that kept a horrible loser like Wayne Fontes as head coach for 8 years.

As they say, we shall see.
