Grading curiosity - any thoughts

Long time listener, first time caller! Grades just posted (4400605, 63125). Over the years have been pretty good at predicting grades so no real surpirses--but...I must say the Ryan's were a shocker. Although my collecting interest is the second half of the 50's, I do have a lot of 68's. I acquired one Ryan probably 15 years ago and the other perhaps 6 years ago - and both came back NH, MC. Yikes!! I thought I looked at everything before sending but certainly missed a critical Q that coincidentally applied to BOTH cards. Any presumptions from experienced 68ers, submitters , etc on the Ryan phenomenon 2xs? I also sure missed the MK on the Mays - will be interested to get the encapsulation back to see what I overlooked. Anyway, here are the grades

    Pretty nice results.

Most of us take a much more brutal beating on our first sub.

    Welcome to the boards.

Ben, I agree with Shawn. You did pretty well for your first sub. I love that 54 Bowman set too.

Check the Ryan's when you get them back, and make sure that a) They both measure 3 1/2" by 2 1/2", and b) that each corner is a ninety degree angle (i.e., the card is a rectangle, not a trapezoid). If it passes these two tests then resubmit them. I've had cards come back unholdered for that same reason, and each time I've had those cards that passed these two tests reholdered upon resubmission.

    Best of luck,
    Guy

Also check the backs of the cards. In a couple of my first submissions I was so intent on good looking fronts I ignored the backs and had a couple come back as miscut because the problem was in the backs.

I also sent in a beautiful Pete Maravich 2nd year - sharp corners, perfectly centered - but somehow overlooked the pinhole in the middle of the top of the card...It came back a PSA 1.

Did you send these in under the special?

If so, I wonder, could the rejected Ryans be a result of PSA cracking down on the "for cards valued under $75" limit?

It sounds like you think PSA only grades the cards accurately when you get the grades you want. The cards were graded as miscut so leave it as that. Resubmitting them now is like trying to pass a counterfeit c note. If PSA is "the" expert, than honor the grades they give you.

Oh boy,...I can see where this is going. Please,.....its the holidays!
  • I'm not a troll by any means. The cards were graded so leave them as they are and don't resubmit them. Try and counter my point with a substantiated argument.

PSA has expertise. PSA is not infallible. PSA doesn't claim to be infallible - they even have a buyback policy for certain mistakes.

    And yes, you are trolling.

  • Thanks for all the replies. Gotta love the different perspectives. I do apologize for not making my post real clear. I am on this Board for the first time (now the second) but I have submitted many times before - again mostly 50's. In the registry with '57 baseball #30 and #52. Again, thanks for taking the time on an issue that is interesting to me. BTW, haven't ever turned on the ol' PM so don't really know how that works exactly.

Here's a substantiated argument, christy123 - people are not machines, they are human and while some may be practically infallible, no one (not even a PSA grader) is going to always see things the same way twice.

LOL! See, this is where the average simpleton gets themselves in over their head. The thing is this-- there is no such thing as an 'accurately graded card' insofar as the term 'accurate' implies that every card has a 'rightful' grade. You need to think of this in terms of ranges. For example, there's no such thing as a card that 'should be a 9'. Instead, there are cards that have a 20% chance of grading an 8, 70% chance of grading a 9, and 10% chance of grading a 10 (or some other similar breakdown). All a grade represents is a given grader's opinion of the card on a given day. Should you catch a different grader, or the same grader on a different day, the opinion might be different.

Anyone want to speculate on who's alt ID this may be? I have some opinions, but in the interest of good taste I'll keep them to myself.

So you are the one that I've been neck to neck with.
  • My point is that people only value the opinion of PSA or any other grading co. for that matter when it is the grade they think it is (the submitter). If not, they simply resubmit and get caught up in the cycle.
