Schmidt registry set question

this question is for MArc and others with registry sets . Why is the attached Schmidt not on the registry set. It is a 1983 topps stickers box bottom card (hand cut) . I will be grading it and seeking to have it added to the set

    Phil, a few answers:

    A) PSA's backlog is now on the order of four months. So requests made in July are still not included in the Master Set.

    B) PSA has never graded any 1983 Topps Sticker Box cards. I have submitted various players from the set numerous times. PSA has steadfastly not graded them. Whether this means anything or not, I shall not speculate. I can affirm that PSA can be notably inconsistent with grading oddball sets - and sometimes they will, sometimes they won't. There are very few sets that PSA definitively have said they will not grade, or, rather, no longer grade (1984 Nestle, 1981-1983 PermaGraphics, 1988 Nestle, etc.)

    C) I would continue to say that the Mike Schmidt Master Set represents the most comprehensive collection of a single player's cards on the Registry for cards that PSA grades. Especially if you include the dozen or two cards that are in the four month queue to be added. My personal goal for 2007 is to have PSA essentially declare a moratorium on additions to the Mike Schmidt Master Set simply because everything has been graded and added already. I think there are very few other player sets, particularly in the modern era, that can even boast anything close to this percentage of completion in terms of possible PSA graded cards versus what is in the Registry.

  • I've noticed the 84 and 88 Nestle refusal to grade. Whats with that ?? These are legitimite insert sets and are listed in the std catalog of BB cards. I thought that was the criteria ??

I recently asked PSA by email if they would grade cards from this set and the response I received back was that they would. I sent an order a couple of weeks ago that included 2 of Pete Rose and 2 of Mike Schmidt along with a copy of the response I received from PSA on this set. I will let you know if they grade them.

I actually have graded PSA examples of each. PSA's basic "issue", if you will is that the Nestles were distributed (also) in sheet form, and they don't have the ability to tell the difference between the ones that were cut from sheets.

  • Hello all. I would like to add my (very friendly) 2 cents to this thread. Now call me bias, as I do have the #1 set as of today's date, but I believe the Nolan Ryan Master set is the quintesential master set on the registry. Here is my thought pattern; right now the set stands at 838 cards and I have over 220 sitting in the queue to be added. These include cards from foreign countries, the Topps Supers, box bottoms, panels never graded before, some of the Pacific cards (including auto), the Star sets (including promos that are listed as being 1/200, 1/100 and 1/50 and different color back variations), 7-11 discs, solo Classic set, solo Barry Cola set (including auto), Starting Line-Ups, UD comic ball set and holos, tattoos, magazine cards and stamp panels. Presently I am at 98.57% complete on the 838. Next year will see the addition of the rare Venezuelan 1968 rookie and hopefully movement into the 99% area.

Ok, so I reviewed the Schmidt set again, and it is a beautiful collection. No jokes there. Let's pretend it's Japanese baseball and call it a tie! Congrats on the set... it truly is a "master" collection!

(Considering the bashing I have taken as of late from one person on the Nolan Ryan thread, let me state that the above posting is all in good humor and that all collections, no matter how big or small, what player or company, means a lot to their individual owners, and THAT is what collecting is all about. Who cares about awards at the end of the day.... just another thing to dust as my wife would say!)

Terry - the NRMS is pretty extensive. My only reference was that I think there are only about three to four dozen more possible cards to add to the Schmidt Master Registry set, and I know at least two dozen of those are in queue. My reference to comprehensiveness was to the number of cards currently listed in the Registry as compared to the number of possible additions.

  • That's cool. I wish I knew where the end of the Ryan set was, total number wise, but I figure it could top 1200 at this point. Can you imagine if he played another 5 years??? That total would top 1500-1600 I'm sure!

Anyway, congrats again..... the set is very impressive.

off sport here, but the Brett Favre master set if ever fully done will top out at well over 6000. That is about the number of his cards right now from the beckett site. there are only 1100 right now in the set. i am just under 25%. i have many waiting to be added and about 1000 that need to be graded.

i must agree though. its pointless to argue which master set is the best, because we all know that it is the set that we collect that is the best. actually someone like aaron, rose, starr etc (players whose playing years crossed multiple decades) might be the best of them all. they have such a wide range of cards (companies, styles and types to collect).

this is the thing that makes player sets so much fun and tasking.

  • Very impressive of both the Ryan and Schmidt sets. Is the Ryan set the only registry set with 0.50 grade weight? I have never seen that before.
  • Just to add about cards that PSA will not grade. Perma-graphics are gradeable now. I had one that I had purchased off EBay and had it added to my master set. I sent in several more of Rose and also included players from my other sets. Well after getting them denied and going through the thrash with C/S they got graded. Not well but that's another story. I am waiting for them to be loaded into my player master sets. Hopefully this will end any issues with these cards but probably not.

They will also not grade the general mills cereal cards. They did but they don't anymore. I've heard the same thing about the nestle cards about the sheet cut cards.

Are you sure about the Perma-Graphics? They used to grade them, but have not since 2003, as far as I know. I wasn't aware that they were actively grading these anymore. I have four PSA-graded Schmidt examples, but was about to send in a whole bunch of star cards (including some of the rare Gold Perma-Graphics) in to SGC for grading.
