Brady Quinn to the Raiders or the Lions?

Now there is a depressing thought unless he really wants a challenge.

The question is will they take Smith, a projected 2-3rd rounder, in the 1st round?

I guess they could conceivably get both.

I just want a decent one available when it's the Texans pick.

I won't be picky, just ANY qb, please.

A little greedy after passing on Young, Cutler, and Leinart.

I would HATE to be a Texan's fan.

    Sorry.

The Texans' problem is the same as the Lions'-- their offensive line is just terrible. It doesn't matter who you put behind center, they're going to perform poorly.

I know it's all the rage to rag on the Texans for drafting Mario Williams, but I don't think it was all that bad of a pick. For one thing, the draft is always a gamble; at this stage it may look like Mario is going to be a bust, but there's no way you could have predicted that. And secondly, the Texans' O-Line is so bad that drafting Leinart or Young would have been useless UNLESS they were also planning on spending a bunch of money on some decent guards and tackles.

Bad franchises almost always have a history of neglecting their offensive line. Drafting a solid left tackle isn't sexy, and these teams often feel like they need to make a splash in the draft to keep the fans interested, so they end up taking players that have very little chance of succeeding so long as the current roster remains intact. On the flip side, however, teams that DO suck it up and draft exceptional O-Linemen are often rewarded. Look at St. Louis; anyone notice how Kurt Warner's been doing without Orlando Pace? Or look at the Ravens-- Jonathon Ogden is the ONLY reason why a QB as inept as Trent Dilfer was able to be productive enough to procure a Lombardi Trophy for Art Modell. The Jets were one of the worst teams in football last year, and Pennington appeared all but finished. Then they go out and pick up Ferguson and Mangold, and viola! They're in the hunt for the wildcard.

In defense to the Texans, we originally planned to have one heck of an O-Line. Tony Boselli was broken (which was quietly downplayed in the media for some odd reason) and Orlando Pace teased us last off-season. Additionally, most of Carr's issues are NOT because of our line; it's mostly in his head. I would say about 75% of the time, David can either run or throw the ball safely but because of his previous experiences, he sharts in his pants and curls up in the fetal position.

Personally, I like Sage to be our starter; has a great attitude and leadership qualities. Draft a young QB and slowly mold him into the QB of the future. Heck, if a highly touted LT is available, take him and then draft a Kolb-like player in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Finally, and probably for the 10th time on these boards ( image ), I don't believe Williams was a terrible pick because of the numerous question marks that surrounded both Vince and Bush. No one wanted to trade up and Mario was a safe, yet not sexy, pick.

I would be shocked if Smith isn't taken in the top half of the first round. Every thing I've read recently indicates his stock is rising with the scouts.
  • Brett Favre 2nd round, Brad Johnson 9th round, Matt Hasselbeck 6th round, Marc Bulger 6th round, Tom Brady 6th round, Aaron Brooks 4th round, Trent Green 8th round, Doug Flutie 11th round............

Get some offensive line protection first and you're quarterback will do just fine!

I'm sorry did you just compare Aaron Brooks to Favre, Hasselbeck, Brady and Green?

I'll bet that if you put David Carr on the KC Chiefs he would go off for something like 30 and 13 and 4000 yards. And anyway, the QB position IMO is terribly overrated. All you really need is someone who doesn't make too many stupid mistakes and can hand the ball off to a stud RB.

The great thing about a quality O-line is that they make EVERYONE on the offense better. The give the quarterback time to make the best decision, RB's the chance to create in space, and WR's the opportunity to run more sophisticated routes. Yet for whatever reason O-lineman are still, IMO, horribly undervalued in the free agency market.
  • BooPotts, I totally agree! The Wisconsin Badgers are a perfect example of what you just said.....even though we are talking about the NFL, this is still relevant. They recruit a great offensive line all the time, an average quarterback and let the running backs run wild......Ron Dayne, Michael Bennett, Brian Calhoun and now PJ Hill. Real basic concept!

The Chiefs thank you for that bit of respect image

I don't know that the QB position is overrated. I still think that the QB has to be the best/smartest player on the team. Without Pumpkinhead, the Colts would be nothing. Without Brady, the Pats are not a dynasty. But still O Linemen are the best of the unappreciated. If you don't have a O-Line you can't move the ball.

You are absolutely correct. I was spoiled growing up watching Mathews and Munchak, so I know how valuable they are. Prior to the draft, I was hoping we would trade down and pick D-Brick.

The Lions would need the top 5 picks in the draft to even smell improvement. The team is such a mess, on and off the field. There is little doubt in my mind that Millen will be fired this offseason, but his fingerprint is going to be on this team for the next 3-4 years at the least, as the team has to live with the horrible mistakes he has made.

I don't even know where the Lions start when they look to focus their needs. Sure, they need a QB, but I think that would be a waste of a pick... they need an entire offensive line, corner backs, and a second legitimate wide receiver. Kevin Jones sucks as a running back too, but he'll have to do (assuming he can recover from his recent injury) as there are much more important things that need to be addressed first.

The coach needs to be fired too, he's clueless, but they'll give him a pass since it's his first season and the team was such a wreck before he took over.

The being said, it wouldn't suprise me to see the Lions pull off 2 upset victories in their last 3 games (Green Bay/Chicago/Dallas) and manage to screw up their draft position as well.

Competing for the top pick image

    Det 2-11
    Oak 2-11
    TB 3-10
    Clev 4-9
    Hou 4-9
    Wash 4-9
    AZ 4-9
    STL 5-8
    SF 5-8
    GB 5-8

Don't know how the tie-breakers work out but we beat OAK, lost to WASH, and play CLEV in 2 weeks.
