Anyone been to the coin shop in Plymouth, NH? -- UPDATE -- I went!

Well? What's the scoop?

I don't live all that far from there -- well, I do, but when you live as far from anything much as we do, you kind of become willing to travel once in a while. Worth a trip?

  • Despite the fact that I live in TN, I have been to the coin store in Plymouth! It's diagonally across the street from Anderson's bakery and the Lucky Dog (nice restaurant). From what I can tell it's a decent shop. The guys in the store are friendly and the selection is OK (a bit high, but hey it's a coin shop). I mostly collect VAMS and while I didn't find too much, they didn't seem bothered that I sat down and tried to cherry pick 1921 VAMS. I think they are closed on Mondays. Overall, considering the size of the town, it's a good shop.

I buy occasionally from Rare Coins of NH, and have had nothing but great experiences with them. I have been meaning to go by their store the next time I'm up in NH.

I went ... and the guy has a decent array of things! There's a case of slabbed stuff; I cannot account for all of it, but decent looking stuff in top-tier plastic included an 1877 IHC in Fine-15, an 89-CC in handsome VF-something, a 55 double die, and other noteworthies. Two large cases are jammed several layers deep in decent raw type coins from Fine to choice Unc, graded & priced reasonably. There is also a deeper clog of Morgans than I cared to negotiate, but a cursory perusal showed some fairly difficult stuff among the mix. A couple of handsome slider-ish 97-O's come to mind, but there was lots more than I could really take in. Boxes of cheapies in 2x2's were well stocked. I pulled out a lovely gem-plus silver Ike, in fact, for 7 bucks. The guy who runs the shop is really friendly. I took up a bunch of his time playing show & tell, etc.

He has at least one really good surprise, too, but I'll let you go up there & earn it.

All in all, not a bad field trip.

  • But did he have any good Seated coins?
I mean, hey, I live on the West side of Michigan.
That's a long way to ride my plow horse and then find out there's nothing for me.

<< <i>but did he have any good seated coins >>

Good question. I am at the point with my type collection where my seated coins are as good as I can afford, so I don't really look anymore. With only one solitary exception, and that being a ridiculously colorful & charming albeit badly scuffed VF no-motto quarter, I have coins in grades I cannot really afford to upgrade. I did see a fair amount of honest original VF-AU material of this sort, and a few nice looking & colorful choice uncs, mainly in small denominations (I remember a really attractive w/arrows half dime of this sort). Who knows what there might be for a variety guy. I can't say. Michigan is a long trip ...
