How does this get a PSA 8???

I bought this card of ebay(seller id is deltonjames). Anyway, I received the card and it has 2 1/2 inch scratches or weird white print runs(not sure which) that run parralel across Frank's bat just beyond his hands. It also has what looks to be a moisture spot which I'm sure you can see under the N in Robinson along the bottom border. It is about 1/2 the size of a pencil eraser. I cracked the card out yesterday. My first PSA crackout. All I did was take a flathead screwdriver and apply a little pressure at the middle of the top of the slab. The slab popped open easily and the card flew out as well since I was holding the slab at a downward angle. Is it safe to say this slab was tampered with at some point. The corners, gloss, edges and centering all are PSA 8 quality. I contacted the seller I got it from and saw that he purchased it from eBay seller q_commerce, who seems to be a very reputable seller. I also cracked out 4 PRO graded cards yesterday. image

I'm guessing the PSA 8 was NOT tampered with.

As for the scratches/print runs, they could be print lines, which do not appear to be evident on the scan. As for the moisture spot, it is clearly evident in the scan, and bidders should have bid accordingly.

Buy the card, and not the holder is the tired (but true) mantra of this hobby.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Look closely just beyond Frank's right index finger and you'll see the vertical line I think. That is the second one. The first blends in with the color of the bat. Yes, the scan wasn't the best when I bought the card. Once I looked at it again I could see the water/moisture spot clearly but no sign of the scratches. Anyway, I blew $12 but I'm just trying to get thoughts mainly on the moisture spot. Do you think it happened before the card was slabbed or after, due to heat or something?

I had one of those moisture spots on a bvg Bradshaw. I think mine was just missed by the grader but yours is way too hard to miss.

I dont know how it would have happened after being slabbed. Maybe something happened after the grade was assigned and sent off to be slabbed?

Those "grease/moisture" spots are actually quite common on the 1972 Topps cards. I have had some graded a 9 with them.

Not sure what you gained by cracking it but good luck to you.
  • I have a raw version of that Frank Robinson card. It has the exact same markings. I thought until now they were scratches . The seller I purcased it from listed the card as NRMNT. Needles to say I was not happy upon receiving the card. I only paid like $5 or $6 for it so I didn't raise a fuss. Now that I see your card I am going to have to inspect mine more with a loupe. The card I have without those scratches, upon just a quick glance with bright light, seems to have a shot at an 8, maybe even a 9 if those "scratches" are print marks on every 72. The centering is good, and the corners can cut glass. I'll try and post a scan, when I get home tonight.

Why would you crack the card out? It's an 8 - a lot of cards have marks that are common to a particular year, or card. Doesn't mean someone is trying to scam you on a $12 card.

You seem like a difficult Ebay customer, based on your posts of the last two days. Calm down a bit.

Here here. You seem like you're probably new to third party grading, and don't understand the inconsistencies that are endemic to the process. You should consider learning more about the ranges in condition that PSA/SGC/ etc. will tolerate for different grades before you start popping off with accusations regarding 'tampered slabs'.

  • Not new and not that disgruntled either. My issue about the opened package didn't involve a sportscard. It was my first "bad" experience on eBay in 7 years other than one non-paying auction winner. Again, not new to 3rd party grading at all. I've sent cards to all the "big" 3(PSA, SGC, & BVG) even sent some when it was only BGS before they even started BVG. Started submitting around '98, probably sooner than a lot of board members. I have several GAI cards but have only done a raw card review with them at a local show. I have definitely seen discrepancies within grades but had never seen anything like this 72 Robinson. Honestly I could live with the print marks/scratches. I basically just cracked the card out because I wanted to inspect the moisture spot further. I paid $12 including shipping and it was eating at me for 2 months wondering about the card. Thanks for all of the input and no, I'm not letting 2 bad experiences over the past 2 months deter me from the "bay" because I've had too many good experiences both buying and selling over the last 7 years or so.

If you're not new to 3rd party grading, then what are you doing cracking PRO holders?
  • Got the 4 PRO cards for dirt cheap a few years back. They were as follows. 75 Schmidt PRO 8, 75 F. Robinson PRO 9, 68 Topps Game Rose PRO 8, and 73 Rose PRO 6. Just cracking them for practice, not to resubmit. I am skilled enough to see that the Schmidt and Robinson are trimmed. The 68 game card is probably a PSA 6 or 7. The 73 Rose is either a 7oc or 8 oc as it is about 90/10 side to side.
