Chance of 86 Ryan Getting 9?

Any chance of this 86 Topps Ryan getting a 9? The top edge white specs actually look a little more pronounced in the scan, but it looks like they were from the cutting of the card.

Maybe I'm a little too harsh, but that chipping stands out a little too much for a 9. Maybe an 8, but even that might be stretching it a tad...

I would have to agree with previous poster, I would say that card has very little chance at a PSA 9. The 86 Topps Ryan card is an extremely tough card to get in high grade, between the black on the front and the red on the back, there's not much room for defects to hide, and that only matters when you find one that is actually centered well enough to begin with.

I think there is a chance. To say there isn't a chance would deny all the head scratchers we have seen on this board. This card is borderline for a 9, based on the scan. The only corner that looks the least bit touchd is the bottom right. I am not saying that card is deserving of a 9, especially off of a scan, but to say the card has ZERO chance for a 9 is a bit overboard. Also, "an 8 might be stretching it"? PLease. How about you send it in and see how it goes?

  • That's a nice looking card when you consider it came out of a set where the cards seem to chip and dent just by looking at them funny. But it probably won't grade a 9.

In most cases, a PSA 9 is a card that has no defects visible to the naked eye, while a 10 has none that show up under 10x magnification. Of course, every grader has good days and bad days, and sometimes a "good" card ends up one grade lower while a "bad" card ends up one grade higher. With all that said, those white spots are visible defects, and your card will probably end up with an 8 (assuming there's nothing out of sorts on the back).

Also, the smaller white specs on the left and right are noticeable too...

The 1986 is one of my fave Ryan cards... I tend to buy them just for kicks when I can... I have a PSA 9 Topps Tiffany and four PSA 8's of the non-Tiffany. I'm looking at them now, and I'd say the 8's look similar to yours (one has a few more specks, one has a couple less).

Heck, there aren't any PSA 10's in the population report... that's a testament to the horror of the black ink.
Nolan Ryan & Edgar Martinez are my favorite players...

The bottom right corner looks touched a bit (look at it under a loupe) - but the centering is nice enough. I'd bet the lower right corner and slight chipping keeps you at an 8, though.

  • Actually I was looking at that top edge kinda sideways and I think another white spec appeared image

  • Thanks for the opinion everyone. I've been looking for this card for my Ryan set. This card is from my own collection from an old box I found stashed away at my parents house. I think I might send it in anyway, still deciding.

Also, here is a better scan of the complete card (the upper left hand corner is sharp, don't know why it appears a little fuzzy in the scan).

  • what zef said
  • i think NO WAY a 9......when you can see anything wrong with card after looking at it for 5 seconds, its not a 9....
a 9 is when you have to stare at the card for 1 minute and barely seen anything wrong....

i would think that is closer to a PSA 7, especially with the slight chipping on the side black borders and the top......

i have some PSA 8's where i still cant find much wrong with the card (without magnification)....

the 2001 Fleer Premium set is similar, but it has all black borders...there are zero PSA 10 Pujols fleer premiums and only a handful of 9's.......

Topps 2007 shouldbe interesting in that they finally are going back to black borders....
