Boston to Los Angeles -- Cannonball Run

So I'm heading back out west at some point in the very near future. Normally, my main goal would be to draw the straightest line between the two locations (I've done it in 58 hours before, 46 hours of actual driving) but with the weather I'm thinking of taking a southern route.

Anyone got any suggestions on places to stop along the way? I've zig-zagged across the country on numerous occasions so the basic highlights and stops have all been covered. Just looking for something more "off the beaten path" or unknown. Any and all suggestions welcomed.

My only advice would be to take the 40 instead of going further south and picking up the 10. Arkansas looked nice and Sedona is very cool, but basically I just barrelled thru. A radar detector and ipod is a must.

Probably way out of your way, but the Flight 93 memorial south of Johnstown, PA is a place I recommend everyone seeing. Not too far away is a monument erected at the site where 6 or seven miners dug out a few years back.

Also, there are websites dedicated to this exact question. I remember seeing one that was solely about where large animals are buried such as circus elephants.

  • Did it 15 years ago with the wife in 3 days. We stopped at the Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon and Vegas Baby.
I'm sure you have been to all of those places.

    Good luck and be safe!
  • Albuquerque at sunrise is beautiful ... the balloons along the horizon is breathtaking as the sun comes up. It's also worth a trip into Sante Fe or Taos. If you really wanted to veer off course, drive south about 5 hours and hit Carlsbad Caverns (stopping in Roswell along the way).

New Mexico is such and underrated state.

  • Tom, I agree with you. New Mexico is a beautiful place. I've been to the Caverns before. If I remember correctly when you reach the top where the parking lot is you can look out and see for miles. When we got there we could see a distant rain storm in its entirety, pretty cool.

I know you said you wanted to take a southern route and this is in Alexandria, Ind. , but you said you were looking for something "off the beaten path". And it is sorta sports related. image

  • Arthur I have done the cross country from california many times. the 40 is great but whatever you do dont speed through oklahoma. bunch of corn fed okie highway patrol all over the place.
7 trips a cross the country only placed i ever been pulled over 3 time in oklahoma. They still use speed traps there. First time was a big ol okie boy hiding behind a bill board got me doing 93.
Last time i was smart had my radar detector. I swear that thing never shut up going through oklahoma. Still got pulled over but got a warning that time.

How was it a speed trap? If you were going 93, they probably didn't have to do much to "trap" you.
  • Shiloh TN. One of the best preserved battlefields in the world. Not to mention, I consider it the most pivotal battle of the Civil War. The south lost the war at Shiloh, not Gettysburg IMHO.
  • Go Union!

It was broad daylight and he was hiding behind the billboard where you could not see him and your radar cant detct them as soon when they hide. Thats called a speed trap and is illegal in most states now. The cops have to be visible before you pass them .

I guess it isn't illegal there, huh? Live and learn.

Try not going 93 mph and endangering other drivers.
  • The largest ball of twine in Cawker City, Kansas has been supplemented by the entire community to make the ball larger. There is a twine ball in Darwin, MN, which one man made, and is just slightly smaller than the one in KS.....

I thought the one in MN was the largest until reading this post. I saw the one in MN in the 1980's, before it was enclosed in plexiglass. It's big. HEE

There's also a "carhenge" in Nebraska. There are many great parks, including Custer state park in South Dakota, Canyonlands and Arches in Utah, Glacier in Montana, Rocky Mountain in Colorado....there are a lot of great things to see.

I'm mostly familiar with things north of I70, but there are interesting sights to see everywhere.
