Question about 1955 Armour Mantle coin

I have a correct spelling coin that has the batting L-R on the back. I know the incorrect spelling has batting L or R. My question is, are these the only variations, or does the correct spelling coin also exist as batting L or R? And if so, which is the rarer variation? Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

    What sources have you checked?

    The Standard Catalog of BB only lists two variations - the correct spelling being the most valuable/scarce.

    Have you checked the registry? This is what I found - and I took it out of the guy with the best set:

    CHARLES MICKEY MANTEL/INCORRECT SPELLING 10 5 0

    CHARLES MICKEY MANTLE/CORRECT SPELL-BATS L - R

    CHARLES MICKEY MANTLE/CORRECT SPELL-BATS L OR R 7 3 10

    He has the incorrect spelling issue in 10 and he has the correct spelling one where it lists him as Bats L or R.

    Now he doesn't have the one that has the correct spelling and BATS L - R - so I would infer that it is the more scarce item.

    Keep in mind, another factor is gonna be the "COLOR" of the coin - some are rare and some are common.

    MICKEY MANTEL INCORRECT SPELL. 0 0 1 3 5 19 18 1 5 52
    MICKEY MANTLE CORRECT SPELL-BATS L - R 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 2
    MICKEY MANTLE CORRECT SPELL-BATS L OR R 0 0 1 0 3 3 5 0 2 14

    The key number is the last one which I highlited - you can see that the incorrect is the most common and the BATS L - R would appear to be the scarcest - keep in mind that's being deduced from these stats only.

  • Thanks. It looks like I have the scarcest variation. The reason I asked is that I just saw a PSA 8 on ebay that is already up to $400. Granted mine is not graded, and is a common color (dark blue), but I would put mine in the 7 range. Good to know if I ever need to sell.
  • Hello - Armourphil here.....the correct MAntles as you have stated exist as both L-R and L or R. By comparison with other advanced collectors Iv'e found the distribution appears about equal. Don't pay any attention to the PSA populations. There were already 10+ graded when I gave them the final variations. Since they then didnt know what the first 10+ were, they just guessed.

    BTW, the SCofBB 2007 has the two corrected copies at the SAME value - 400$.

    And that's why I was careful to tell gray that the deduction was from the pop report.

    Last - how does one get to be an "advanced" collector? image
