Just bought my first Indian Head $5 gold.

NGC AU-58. Wow. Common date, 1911. She's beautiful. I can see a 1911 $2.5 to match it in my future. It really is a very stunning design up close.

    Got a pic?

  • I wish, but don't have a camera set up that would do it justice. Just slight wear on the high spots. Very slight.

One of my favorite designs. The first use of a Native American (1908) on a US coin. Unfortunately they frequently come with fine scratches in circ condition since they don't have a raised rim to protect the fields.

Must be one of the reasons the price spikes so heavily from AU to MS. They would scratch fairly quickly without the rim.

I just bought a 1914 AU-58 Indian $2.50 for my type set. It looked pretty scratch-free and the fields looked great from the image so I pulled the trigger:

  • Very similar to my 1911 $5. Ziggy. Nice 1914 you have there.image

I think you're smart on pulling the trigger. I think gold is going much higher and I wanted at least one Indian before it does.
  • Just a side note, I bet the "B.L.P" drove Charles Barber nuts. Even more prominent that "V.D.B" was on the Lincoln cent.image
  • Very nice coin.
I have a MS61 of this one NGC. Can I ask the cost???
I'm trying to value my 61 and can't find that level

  • I've looked around pricing MS-61 common date $2.5 Indian Head gold. I'm seeing around $360-$370.

Thx for reply. My coin is a 1914 like the one that this thread started about.
Is that the price for that year that you found????
Where did you look for MS61??????

    Thx

  • My apology. 1914 Philly mint appears not to be common date $2.5 gold. I'm seeing more like $710 to $720 for that exact date.

The "B.L.P." initials were aded to the master hub by Barber, much as he added "VDB" to the cent master die in 1909.
