worst time to sell?

Anyone have an idea of how bad (or good) selling cards on ebay is in December and January? I recently sold a mantle psa 7 on the bay and it went about 20 to 30 dollars less than expected. granted, i understand the concepts of variance when selling/buying cards....but, mantle cards are pretty strong in the current market and i expected it to go at least SMR. I have some other cards i am thinking of selling...but, should i wait till jan or february?

thanks in advance

    I think so, too.

That does not mean that you can never do well at other
times, but spring training often gets the experienced
buyers back in, and brings lots of newbies, too.

Auctions will probably continue to under-perform on
EBAY. If sellers are not in a hurry, FP/BIN listings are
now bringing VERY good results. List high (SMR) and
adjust down slowly until one of the watchers bites.

If card sellers need money in January and February
of 2007, that may be a good time NOT to be a seller.

In my opinion the time of year matters more for modern stuff. Not sure it matters for vintage!? Hank Aaron is not going to hit any more home runs. Just my opinion.

That was my thought as well. Seems liek the low pop's (I wanted to sell this week) are still going strong for 55 topps. I am afraid after this specail the low pops will be no more!

I sold a Mantle PSA 7 last Sunday for a nice profit. Previous sales had the card selling for around $320 and mine sold for $380 (it's not any nicer than the others).

I don't think it really matters when you list, unless your auctions are ending at 5 AM on Sunday morning. It seems like prices fluctuate for no apparent reason from one week to the next. I've seen items close at $100 one night and $200 the next. It all depends on the bidding action and I find it interesting that a bidder will bid an item up for XX amount one day and not even bid or let the same exact (or even better) item go for significantly lower a couple days later.

I would think (for vintage) that Cabin fever would help. late January and February should do well.

I agree that for modern stuff spring training would be great too.

Also, when new heritage comes out, old heritage seesm to do well

There's a rule of thumb that the week before Christmas is quite good (people receive Christmas bonuses and buy for themseves) and the week after Christmas is bad (vacations).

  • I think the best time to sell is right after Christmas, everyone is home for the holidays and most likely on their computers.
And feebay usually has a free listing day on the 26th and everyone takes advantage of it.

  • I don't sell much but as a buyer I can tell you that I've watched a lot of heartbreaking auctions end without my involvement recently. With the holidays and everything there just isn't a lot of disposable income lying around. Because of that I would tend to believe that selling now isn't probably the most lucrative option. Oddly enough, I've noticed a large increase in items listed.
