That was like Jerry Kramers Super Bowl Ring that was stolen and recently turned up for auction. I guess some auction houses dont have problems trying to sell "hot" items.

"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
Sad that the item actually made it to catalog. I wonder what the consignor told them when he consigned it and how Mastro followed up on it? I guess it just goes to show what Mastro's main interests are. Truly sad indeed.....
I don't know how much more Mastro can be expected to do. The consigners all have to sign a lengthy paper stating the item being sold is their own property and that no one else has any claim to it. With this story almost all the principles have passed and the ball had been out of circulation for over a decade.
Mastro has cooperated and turned the ball back over to the apparent rightful owners.
I'm sure they didn't realize it was stolen. It's a good PR lesson, too, to make yourself available to discuss what's generally an embarrassing situation. Many would hide in that case, which is the worst thing you can do.
I've signed many a consignor sheet for Mastros. Mastro cooperated after a court order was issued. How many Ruth autographed balls to Ted Williams are out there? It would have taken one phone call early on to handle the situation. Whatever happened to their "ironclad provenance"?

What a great item!!!
IMO, this would've brought some righteous bucks if not stolen!
The Babe personalizing a ball to Ted Williams! One of the best pieces of memorabilia I have seen.
Thanx for posting this Rip! I'm saving the pic to my file.
