Uncirculated

Another dumb question from a old collector - new to grading - since an uncirculated card is slabbed - I guess you dont grade????????

  • The debate on the grading of "uncirculated" or manufacturer-slabbed cards is a heated one, for sure, especially on the Beckett and eTopps boards.

Some people believe that the card and slab are a married pair, that the card is worthless once you open the factory-sealed slab.

Most believe that it's just a card like any other and that getting it graded and put into a PSA or BGS slab can greatly enhances the value like it would to any other card.

The quality of so-called "uncirculated" cards can vary, so grading them isn't a silly thing to do. I have five 2001 Ichiro Suzuki eTopps cards. They're all beautiful, but one has a corner that would probably look soft under a 10x loupe. If I sent them in for grading, I'd expect four 10's and that fifth card to get a 9.

Looking at eBay, it sure doesn't seem like grading "uncirculated" cards is a bad idea. Just do a search for "pujols etopps bgs" or "carmelo etopps bgs" or "topps pristine refractor bgs" and see some of the prices those cards fetched. Those buyers obviously didn't mind that the cards were removed from the factory-issue slab and put into a BGS slab. It also shows that BGS is the best service to use if you want to get top-dollar for modern cards. I love me some PSA, but those numbers don't lie. Of course, part of that could be because uncirculated cards are often very thick, and PSA can't slab thick cards yet.

So, not a dumb question at all. By all indicators, grading an "uncirculated" card is just as worthwhile as getting any other card graded. If it's for your personal collection, there probably isn't much point. But if you're looking to sell, you'll probably get more money for the graded card (even if a few people consider cards taken out of factory slabs as damaged goods).

  • Not a dumb question at all.

Does PSA/BGS/SGC put on the flip that the card is an uncirculated one? If so, I would much rather have a graded version of the card because there are a lot of fakes floating around. I'd be much interested in PSA or BGS verifying that the seal is untampered with and the card is indeed an uncirculated one, not so much interested in the grade as in the authenticity.

I remember when Francisco Liriano was lighting the world on fire there were many "uncirculated" bowman chrome cards floating around that were pretty damn circulated. image

I have graded several of these with PSA, and no - they don't put anything on the flip. But, once you crack the card from it's factory holder, it's not uncirculated anymore, in theory - so it's probably not correct to indicate as such. I am not sure what the other companies do.

  • Probably SPAM but, oh, well . . .

I am currently unloading (attempting) a bunch of garbage on eBay. I notice one card had UNCIRCULATED on the flip. No idea what this means.

The uncirculated on that flip is there as PSA graded the cards from the manufacturer before they were placed into packs for "circulation"

    Uncirculated?

Which card companies are participating in this practice with PSA?

Mike ... I think it was a trial run with PSA (boy did they pick a cluncker of a product to team with) after SGC did the same with UD Graded football. I don't think they do this anymore

Exactly right - I forgot about those.

I think the uncirculated cards talked about here, are cards like the Pit redemptions, box toppers, and Pristine refractors.
