How to find out if a coin is in someone's registry set

I just recently sold a coin on eBay -- a 1974-S quarter. Well, the buyer left me neutral feedback, with the comment: "did not remove coin from pcgs inventory listing after requesting." Well, first of all, I never had the coin listed in any of my registry sets. Secondly, I had several of these coins. I bought them from Teletrade quite a while ago. I'm thinking that maybe whoever had them before me possibly had them registered in a set, and since I didn't put them in my own set, they were never checked. Since I'm selling a number of my coins on eBay, how can I determine whether they are still registered in someone's set, even though I never registered them in one of my sets?

Thanks!!

  • I don't think there is a way you can check a #.
If you own a coin that somebody has failed to remove from their registry you can send the # to BJ and she will remove it from the previous owner's registry. I think you have to send a picture of the holder & coin to prove you own it.

There are easier ways perhaps, but I would think that if you set up a (temporary) reg. set, and listed those cert. numbers that were of interest, they would either be allowed into your new set or not, giving you the answer you desire. I hope that helps.
  • Thanks Bigbadchad777 and RegistryCoin,
I have my own 1974 registry set, and I don't want to screw it up by "testing" coins in it. This has made me paranoid, though. And since I have a number of coins I am selling, I was just wondering if there was a way to find out before I list an item again. It would be nice if PCGS had a coin cerification query that would just say something like "coin is registered" or something, so people like me could find out. I had a 100% positive feedback until this neutral came along.

You can now register coins into your inventory but not put them in a set. I have my under coins registered and delete them when they sell. Keeps people from stealing the registery numbers off of ebay.

  • Thanks Lindedad! I hadn't thought of using the "Inventory" that way, since I really haven't explored the V2. I'll give it a shot. I hope it doesn't tell me that I have other coins that the previous owner failed to remove. image

It's pretty lame that they gae you a neutral because of that. All they had to do was ask you to remove it and when they found out it wasn't in your registry all they have to do was contact BJ. Leaving you a neutral without contacting you first is low! image
  • Thanks for the support, garsmith. I thought it was pretty crummy, too; but I tried to be as polite and empathetic as possible back...and I even gave him positive feedback after all of that for fast payment. BUT I'm also going to be blocking him from anything else I sell. (Not that he may come back...but just in case.)

I am not sure but since there feedback was given for something that did not pretain to the auction. You might be able to get TRUE TRADE to remove it, it might cost a little money but that is your decision and my thought.

I would neg the loser, but I suspect he waited until you left feedback first. You should let us know who it is so we can block him.

I have one now that I can't list for the same reason. But it's not the fault of the person who sent it to me, they never tried to list the coin. Maybe if you gave us the person who did this to you, some of us could contact him and explain the process.

Dan, I have deleted the coin. You may enter it whenever.

    Later, Paul.

Sometimes sneaky people trying to gain standings in the registry will steal numbers from Teletrade and e-bay until they are asked to remove it.

It's pretty slimy and in these cases none of the owners have them registered. I would explain this to the person who left a neutral.
