Dan Patrick just interviewed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on his radio show. Somehow, they got to talking about baseball (Kareem said that he would have been a pitcher). Anyway, Dan Patrick asked him if Wooden would have let him play 2 sports. Kareem said that he would have let him and that Wooden loved baseball. He then said a shocker - that the Pittsburgh Pirates offered him either a coaches job or the managers job (I can't remember which) back in the 1950's. Talk about learning something new. Dan Patrick was even shocked. That would have sure changed college basketball legend, wouldn't it? Kareem probably would have went somewhere else, along with Walton, and many others.
One more thing that Kareem said (pretty funny). He said that when he came to UCLA that the freshmen were ineligible and had to play on the freshmen team. He said that the UCLA freshmen team (which he was on) beat the defending champion UCLA varsity team! The saying around campus at UCLA? UCLA Varsity - #1 IN THE NATION - #2 ON CAMPUS!
