My father stood in line and enlisted December 8th, 1941 at age 17. Thank God for our vets who defended our country in a time of need. I thought of them yesterday and when I woke this morning. Joe

Would have served my 20, but left after only 9 years. Of course, I left for the wrong reasons (and the b*tch left there shortly after). It's been 13 years since I left and not a stinking day goes by that I don't think about my days in uniform and how much I miss it.

Oh well, I have a great family now so I suppose things worked out fine for me. image

I and my family thank you; the great men and women who proudly serve and who have served to protect and keep this country free.

I was down in DC several months ago and had a chance to thank a group of Vets at the WWII memorial. They were having a reunion that day, maybe about 12 or 15 men and their families.

It brought tears to my eyes to see these aging heroes who we overlook most days or pass off as the slow drivers on the road or fogies showing up for the early bird special.

For that day at least they all stood proud once again and received the recognition and appreciation we all owe them every day.

  • I live 5 milies from The Arizona Memorial and go there a least once a year. There are always WWII Vets there and I don't hesitate to go up to them and shake their hand and thank them. It always brings a tear to my eye. They ask me if I am a Vet and I tell them I served two years in Vietnam. They then take my hand and thank me for my service. My job is interviewing soldiers coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan and I never miss a chance to tell them how proud of them we all are. It did not happen to me and I swore any chance I get to thank a Vet I will. You just have to think, what would this world be like if Hitler had won WWII? A very frieghtening thought.

So to all you Vets I salute you. You are my HEROES!

  • Ed, you're my hero... Thankyou for preserving our Freedom.

My older brother was Green Beret in Nam and now DAV, he echoes your sentiment.

They don't call them "The Greatest Generation" for nothing. Thanks to all who serve our country honorably and who do the dangerous work to preserve the freedoms we all take for granted most of the time. I enjoyed reading these posts, especially the ones about meeting the old WWII vets, and my prayers and best wishes go out to all of our vets and service members. If you're able, make a donation to the DAV, you'll be glad you did and I can think of no organization more deserving of our support (plus they send you real nice address labels for every season!).

I was one of the few still around that served in Vietnam and Desert Storm - I was an old man in the truest sense.

I've met and worked with some of the greatest people on the planet!

    God Bless
