They showed the coin on the news last night, and it looked like a cleaned AU.
It is great that someone donated the coin, but I hope the Salvation Army isn't too disappointed when it comes time to sell.

I was going to say the same thing.
When I saw the 14k price quote, I thought it must be a MS+ 1911-D. Not quite...

I'm also guessing that with the PR the coin is getting, they will probably get big bucks for it.

Also, having the local news report on thse gold coins only helps to get more people to either give money or other valuable coins.

Pssssst, I'll bet you $14K that I can see them.
I would have no problem buying the coin for more than it is actually worth (the funds go to a good cause). The coin is probably worth $160 to $190. But they are expecting $250 to $14,000, so I don't want to bust their bubble. They also may sell it to someone for significantly more than I would pay because of all the press the coin has gotten.

"It's worth anywhere from $250 to $14,000," he said, detailing plans to have the coin appraised.

Very good point, Coinosaurus. I doubt that this deduction with withstand an IRS audit. Folks, the Salvation Army and other reputable charitable organizations accept personal checks, and those almost always will withstand an audit.
