Hi. I've never posted on the Darkside before. I have been reading lots of the posts with great interest and my eyes have opened to a world of beautiful coinage.
What brings me tonight is a question regarding coins with Hippos on them. My YNs younger sister has a little trove of world coins and loves hippos! Who woulda thunk?
I've gotten her a Mali 5 francs and a Liberia $1 and she'll get them when she visits for Christmas. Are there any other Hippos that anyone knows of? Thanks in advance.

The most famous "hippo coin", for old-time collectors that is, would be the Gambia 8 shillings of 1970. CV $10 in Unc, so they're not all that expensive; mintage 25,000, so they might not come up for sale too often.

Hippos are an interesting theme. We have a bear collector here, and at least two ship collectors, and there were some lion collectors.

I also check Black Mountain Coins in addition to Joel's Coins and eBay. They currently have the 1994 Liberia hippo dollar and 2005 Sierra Leone hippo dollar. You seem to have the Liberia one already but the Sierra Leone one has an interesting design. Hmm, I never realized that hippos can gallop at 18 mph (according to the BMC website) - learn something new everyday.
