Cubs signed Ted Lilly

4 year $40mil is a lot of money for a guy who has a 1 game over .500 career record and a 4.67 ERA.

Welcome to the new world of teams who are supposedly flush with cash.

Expect higher ticket prices, higher concessions, and an overall much more expensive experience to pay for these midlevel players.

I'm just glad he's out of the AL East -- he owned the Red Sox.

This is not a good day to be a Cubs fan.

If you're going to pay 10 mill. per for Ted Lilly, you might as well spend 16 mill. per for Jason Schmidt.
  • As a Blue Jay fan, I say good riddance to this guy. He's one of the most inconsistent, enigmatic pitchers out there. Expect five or six innings per start, a lot of pitches, a lot of walks and a lot of strikeouts. I thought he was overpaid last year at $4 million.

"Expect five or six innings per start, a lot of pitches, a lot of walks and a lot of strikeouts."

Sounds to me like he'll fit in quite nicely with the rest of the staff! Thanks for your overpriced crap A.L.
As a lifelong Cubs fan, I'm really getting psyched up for another dissapointing season! Can hardly wait for it to start!!

Thanks a lot for raising the price on Pettitte and Clemens image
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

That makes Pettitte worth about $15 million annually and Clemens' price tag for a full season would have to be $20 million + considering where the bar has been set.
  • Lilly has always had lots of talent, but been inconsistent. There isnt a pitcher in baseball worth $10 million bucks, they are all overpaid.
  • BobaFett,

I've been watching for a couple of seasons now to see if Lilly would turn that corner. He did up his K/IP ratio, and his K/BB ratio.

Simply put, in order for that corner to officially be turned, he is either going to have to reduce his HR allowed, or continue a decrease in BB. He will be going to the NL, so he will have a lower ERA, but that doesn't necessarily help his team win games unless his ERA goes further below the league average than it currently has been.

Rich Hill finally started showing his minor league form in THE MAJORS last year. Notice the huge upgrade in the k/bb ratio from last season compared to the brief horrible stint in '05. I would say Hill pitches like the number two man, and could be pretty good. To me, he is the key to the Cubs pitching staff(aside from Prior of course).

If Hill continues his ascent, then Lilly is serviceable as a number three. I'm not a fan of either Sean Marshall or Wade Miller. 4.50+ ERA's are the best hopes for those guys. If Prior comes back and only one of those scrubs are used, then the Cubs staff wil be pretty good. Their hitting should be nice. Their bullpen could be excellent, and they have to put Wood as the closer...Dempster stinks.
