Your best starting place would be to browse a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins (aka Krause, the Darksider's bible). It can likely be found in any decent bookstore or library. You can probably buy a slightly older copy online for much less than retail.

Once you get your hands on this book the whole spectrum of world coins is available to you. I know when I was a newbie (and sometimes still) I have fun just looking at all the pictures.
  • I am working on a OFEC in Silver Crown/Dollar sized coins. Many can be had fairly cheaply and its a lot more interesting than staring at Morgans. Welcome to the Darkside

I told him that picking a specific year, like his birthyear, might make for an interesting OFEC set.

OFEC is a pretty large challenge, I would think, unless one narrows the focus down to a particular time period or a single year. Otherwise, you gotta have (for example) one East German coin, one West German coin, one coin from each of every eight gazillion German States, and so on.

David- another interesting and fun way to collect Darkside coins is to choose a particular theme. One of our members here does bears on world coins. Another couple of folks do ships. Somebody is or was doing lions at one point in time.
