Question about surface indentions

I picked up a set of cards today (25 cards) with hopes of sending the set off to get graded. The key card in the set was flawless. Sharp corners, great centering, everything looked perfect. However, after removing the card from the hard plastic and penny sleeve I noticed some sort of small indention on the surface of the card. It's not like someone had a sheet of paper over the card and wrote and left an indention. It's a small indention, kind of like a fingernail. The marking doesn't tear through the surface.

So, what type of impact will this have when I send it off?

It depends if they notice it. I'd guess a one grade deduction if it is noticed.

I have an 81 Montana that I sent in a few years ago that has an indention in it. It is about the size of the end of a pencil (eraser end).
I figured they would deduct a lot for it, To my surprise it came back a Psa 7.

I've had the same thing on 2 cards sent in. the first came back a 10 and the second a 9. The cards were perfect other than the marks and both were in the backs.

I had a 86 Fleer Jordan that was stunning except for a small round indentation. They caught that one and it came back a PSA7. Bought a SCD 10 Favre 92 stadium club. Cracked it out to find the same thing. Submitted anyway. Came back a PSA9. So maybe I should crack out the Jordan and resubmit it. Not sure I dont mind the 7 grade. It is staying in my collection anyway.

  • Thanks for the feedback, it's greatly appreciated!
  • Hmmm .... this gives me hope.

I had purchased a raw 1930 Wills Famous Golfers card a while back and when I got it it was stunning. 53/47 L/R and 52/48 T/B. Sharp corners, no markings, I couldn't wait to submit it. Then I broke out the loupe.

Each of the four corners had light quarter-circle indentations from where the card had resided in a album for quite some time. Figured it would be in 1-3 range so it's been sitting in a stack. Maybe I'll submit it afterall. I'd be happy with a 6 or 7.

    I've gotten 5's on my indentations - treated like a wrinkle I guess.image
