It doesn't particularly look like an electrotype to me. But -- always be cautious on ebay; get a return privilege if ANACS or NCS won't slab it as genuine (it is too rough for PCGS or NGC to slab IMHO).

Oh it's real. I have little doubt about that. The seller even divulges it's problem. Porosity. It's rare, too. I suspect it was found via a metal detector, proving once again that there are buried treasures out there image I'll bet lordmarcovan could tell for sure, having used the metal detector and finding copper.image

Definitely looks real, though I doubt I'd touch it raw. Even if I cracked it out to enjoy raw myself, I'd rather purchase it in an ANACS or NCS holder.

Thanks...I wasn't certain on this one. Ground recovery pieces pose authenticity problems for me.

It looks real to me too, but like others said, I don't think I'd lay down big money on eBay without an ANACS or NCS shell.

Here's an electrotype from Shawn Yancey at earlycoppercoins.com. I don't think that coins as corroded as the one in question are often electrocopied but I guess I could see it happening with a rare attribution. Sean, Condor, MikeinFl or others with lots of copper experience could confirm this.

As for the opinion that coins such as this should be slabbed for authenticity, that position could lead to lots of frustration as most of these coins are raw. Early copper collectors tend to deal in raw coins, partly because there are often problems with coins and these problems tend to be more accepted in early copper, especially 1793 copper, than in other coins. If you don't mind corrosion, you'll get a lot more detail for your money than that way. The coin in question has a lot of detail available. It certainly has a rugged appearance.

I'm going to vote fake. The reverse doesn't look right to me. Admittedly I'm no expert and I didn't do any reasearch whatsoever...Mike

It looks real and it's almost certainly can't be an electro. An electro with that much corrosion would show substantial signs of the lead core. On the other hand, the coin could be a cast copy, but I doubt it.

Yes, I have seen a number of dug early coppers that looked like that. That certainly looks like somebody made a very lucky detector find. I only wish I could find stuff like that! Looks real to me.
