Amazing Find! Imaginary unopened Box of BiCentennials!!!

Wow! I was going through the garage looking for Christmas lights when I stumbled upon an old box of seasonal decorations that was marked "lights & occasions". I opened it and to my surprise, among the bruised candles, tangled extension cords and musty wall hangings and stockings, was a beautiful unopened wax box of "BiCentennial American Sportsmen". It was released for the bi-centennial and featured new and established players that were either stars or were reknowned in college, etc. The company, Wishwewouldadonethese, Inc. went out of business shortly thereafter as you may recall. Anyway, this must've been purchased by my folks for me for Christmas and just never made it under the tree. I opened just one pack and got TWO great Chicago cards! The Payton is his TRUE RC as it was captured before his first carry in the NFL and the Gilmore is the rare variation with just the two plain gold stars! As I open the box, I'll share some scans of the cards! I wonder if PSA will add this set to their registry! What a treasure, just sitting waiting for me for 30 years!

I sold a set of those in 1991 for about $500. The set consists of 34 football players, 40 baseball players, 10 hockey, 3 gynmists, and golfer Jack Nickolson. They are unlicensed and have blank backs.

Why is Sweetness wearing his helmet in a parking lot?

it's a dangerous neighborhood, he could get hit over the head with a bottle of old style.
  • No Ric Flair. Sorry.

    ajw,
Payton is actually in front of the "ramp" that leads to the locker rooms. I does look like a parking lot though, doesn't it?
Ron Mrowiec is the photographer on that one. The slide is SO dark it is almost not legible. Some of you may recall the family pics I had been restoring where the black background was manipulated to reveal a lot of detail...same deal on this one. The subject matter is a bit less exciting, but the work is the same.

    I'll rip some more later!

  • I pulled another error card! The George Scott with no gold border! I think they corrected it pretty early on so this one is pretty tough! The Yount is just REALLY tough to find centered, as you guys know, but this one probably goes NM 7...do you guys think he has a shot at an 8NQ? The Munson has gotta be a 10! The card is awesome! It's one of my favorite Munsons, no doubt! The Sistrunk may be a 10 as well.

I don't know, old Ron framed up Munson with a bit too much top.
Hope you pull the No Neck Williams card, one of my favorites.

  • The Munson is a Collins shot. I like the skyward look. I see what you mean about the ratio, however. I do like the way the shadows graduate and the feeling of space it creates. I think a 10 is in order condition-wise. What do those sell for?
