Looks like two guys who wanted it. It's a common date and worth about $2.50.3Mark
I'm traveling on memory and running out of fuel.
  • I know it is a common coin, and I just have a few more sitting around here image it just seems kind of foolish to go so high just to out bid the other guy, who happen to win 1 of my other auctions image .MoJo

Maybe time was a factor and they both wanted it in time for the holidays?

As a serious collector of 3rd Reich coins, I have no idea why anyone would have bid much over melt for that one. image - Preussen

Whoa, deja vu... Lately, I've had several coins or sets go for 2x to 3x to 4x Krause value and I have the same reaction- "they made a mistake or I made a mistake", or, "gosh darn it, when they wake up they'll want their money back". Hey, it hasn't happened- not only that, these items weren't paid with Paypal but with USPS money orders. If you are lucky enough to get two bidders who are only semi-knowledgeable that are competing, the sky's the limit.

And sometimes these "crazy bidders" can be ahead of the curve and pay current (or higher... especially for condition) market value, a greater value than anyone realized was currently market valid.

Within the last ten days I've had a coin I owned for $115 ( purchased 2 years ago from a shop that is not bashful) that sold for $430, and a mint set I owned for $8.00 go for $61.00. Neither one of these auctions reflected pieces that I had up-to-the-moment auction values on. Yes, I was worried with the high auction value-all the same misgivings you have but they paid and no problems.

Seize the day, caveat emptor, hey fool!; whatever works. When someone overpays or pays very fairly (in my opinion) the packaging is always extra special, (perhaps with a little lagniappe- thank you Lord M); 2-day priority with insurance and signature confirmation (at least) accompanies the deal. Not that I shortchange a bidder who may have stolen an auction item-they also get my best!image
