Pop reports
When a coin is graded at PCGS or NGC there are serial numbers assigned to the coin for reference.
Theoretically, if coins were never cracked out, the pop report numbers would be accurate.
But since the practice of coins being cracked out of slabbed holders is widespread for resubmission, the actual nimber of coins reported for the grade potentially is higher if it is assigned the same grade again.
Likewise, a coin given a higher grade in essence loses its previous grade and thus some pop reports may be overly stated.
Any thoughts on which series may have higher pop reports because of this? How is this affecting pricing?

I manage money. I earn money. I save money .
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.

I would be willing to bet that any pop 1 coin is a very accurate reflection of the actual population for that coin, lol.
After that, I'm sure there are plenty of crackouts. It's obvious with some gold, you never see a pop 10 coin come to market, but with other coins you will see 7/10 a year come to market.

Not necessarily. The pop report shows a pop 1/0 MS68 1964 Kennedy that doesn't exist.

Take a look at the $50 Pan Pacs!

The better part of a chapter was devoted to this in How to make money in coins right now by Scott Travers - an interesting book with some good tips, btw.

It's an SMS coin that was mistakenly graded as a business strike. It's now in an NGC SP69 holder, but has never been removed from the PCGS pop report.

PCGS pops: 64RD 66/65RD 1, NGC pops: 64RD=3/65RD=1, ANACS pops: only RD's are 2 MS62's
