Crossover from SGC

Have you had success crossing over from SGC to PSA? Just bought 2 1956 HOFers in SGC84. What do you think is the likelihood of crossing over to PSA 7's?

I've crossed 50-60 over. For the most part they went straight across, the half grade SGC's were split pretty evenly up and down to PSA. Occasionally one or two would take a dive, but for the most part it was pretty consistant.
SGC has weighed centering differently at times, so if the cards are centered that one it can kill you. Otherwise you should be fine.
    Just be careful cracking them.

Agree with Griffins. Pretty even - but centering is key. A well-centered 84 should make a PSA 7.

  • They're centered almost perfectly, which is really why I bought them. What's the best way to crack them, or would you submit them as crossovers?

Crack them to increase your odds. The crossover service is a joke.

I've had good success with vintage SGC crossovers. Modern SGC is another story. I bought (11) SGC 96 1980's Tiffany rookies and every single one of them came back as a PSA 8. They were well centered so I thought I was ok.

Cracking SGC holders is really easy. Take a small blade screwdriver, and instert it in the grove in the edge. Turn it a bit to pop the seal, then move it down the line and do the same. Don't try and pry it open, just pop the edges all around. When this is done it should just come apart. The card and matte may be still on one half due to suction, so you'll want to tap it gently and it will fall right off into your hand. PSA's are really easy too, and open just as easily. GAI, Beckett and especially Pro's are much harder. You'll want goggles and a dremel tool, and cut the corners off for those.
There is another method when you slam the side with a heavy mallet, but I don't have the stomach for that. Supposed to work well though, and safely.

Unless you think they are undergraded and are hoping for 8's - I would first send them using the crossover service and leaving them in their holders. I have had good success recently crossing cards in their holders.
  • I would agree with aro -- submit them for x-over in the holders. My guess is that they will do just fine.

FWIW -- I have also gotten a couple half grade bumps (7.5 to 8) when submitted in the holder.
