1878-S VAM 1D Morgan Dollar - Closeup of Die Gouges in Tail Feathers
I didn't know the VAM when I bought it. Appears to be an 1878-S VAM 1D. I thought the die gouges looked pretty cool. It's only an I-2 R-4 coin.

<< <i>Could be a 1D or a 73; they differ by the obverse. >>
Thanks John. I didn't know about the VAM 73. How many of these die marriages do you have memorized? I just checked and see no spike or doubled eye lid. Guess it's a 1D.
Leroy's description of the 1D states that the gouge extends "through first top berry in left wreath". It's cool that the gouge covers such a large area.

Thanks. I hold a compact digital camera up to one lens on a stereo microscope.
