My Newest Spanish Reales Coin!

Let me know what you guys think. Rob told me that the prices for these pieces were a bit under what they should be. But I found it on eBay and thought maybe I got scammed for the price I paid. But it looks authentic, but it came from a very reputable dealer of antiques and relics. Regardless, it would be good to have for information purposes. In addition I did buy a small book on Spanish colonial coins with a basic introduction, information on the mints, the dates and mintmarks, and basic grading. Have at it and give me some feedback. BTW, these suckers are actually pretty hard to find. Not many of them exist!

  • Not bad-- the obverse would be a strong Good, while the reverse is Very Good, maybe close to Fine. Lima, Peru mint. No holes, natural wear and toning-- all plusses.
  • actually i might upgrade the obverse to Very Good since you do see some face and armor detail showing up, unlike a lot of shadowy
bust Spanish reales you see out there
  • Hey Scott,

These coins are my favorite type. As you probably already know, the one you have picked up came from Lima Peru. I don't see anything that would make me doubt it as authentic. The wear pattern appears pretty consistant with what you generally find.

They can be tough to find, but they are around. They can be very difficult to find in high grades.

If you don't mind me asking - which books are you using?

Well actually, I'm not using any books currently. Mostly because I'm just getting my feet wet. But these are really fun and I'll probably continue my collecting of them. I did purchase the book "Coins Of The Lost Galleons" and will be recieving it in a couple of weeks. Do you have a recommendation?

"Columnarios" (by Gilboy), "Compendium de Ocho Reales" (by Calbeto) are must-haves if you are interested in Spanish colonial 8 Reales. Not sure of the smaller denominations, though. Columnarios covers "pillar dollars" and Calbeto is a fantastic reference for portrait coinage of the colonies. It might be a bit pricey, though. I think I paid around $300 for both Calbeto volumes.

Hmm... interesting. I actually think the obverse is better than the reverse. I'd only give the reverse a Good. Too much wear in the bottom half of the coin; the rim has disappeared entirely, as has half of the lettering.

Looks like a nice pickup, even if you paid too much.

Finding these on eBay at anything approaching Krause catalog price (or even 2x or 3x catalog, for that matter), will probably be tough.

So, what did you decide on, a date set of 2R pieces or a type set with all the denominations?

And- regarding reference material- do you at least have the Krause 18th and 19th C. volumes?

Yeah, I have noticed that they are a bit hard to find, especially for pieces that are 'collectable.' In addition the prices are a bit high. But considering what they are, I'm truly willing to pay it.

I haven't decided on a specific set or goal. I'd rather work on accumulating all that I can at my age now for fun purposes. I'd be really neat to have a nice collection of varying grades, mintmarks, and dates. This way I've got a nice 'hoard' type deal going on of great collectable and historic coins. And perhaps I can sell off the ones that won't fit in a particular 'set' later. After all, they shouldn't be going down in value.

No, I don't have the Krause volumes. I actually just checked the 19th out at the library last week. I'm assuming by the great interest I'm showing in world material I'm going to need these soon.image

The Krause catalogs are good (if not great) at figuring out some values, but for me their greatest value was providing hours and hours of reading and browsing plaeasure....
