Opinions needed on 1901 IHC

I purchased this coin a few months ago for what I think was a great price. It has amazing luster and has amazing blue and purple coloration throughout the coin. There is a finger print on the reverse that doesn't detract too much from the over all appeal of the coin. It is currently in an ANACS holder. I apologize for my poor photography skills. Any opinions as to grade and/or comments on the coin are greatly apreciated.

  • That's a great looking piece. I dig the color and luster. ANACS...hmmm...I don't know. I'll say MS65 BN (changed from RB)

This is a perfect example of a coin that has a fingerprint and it doesn't take away from the eye appeal at all.

You folks are being too generous. While the coin is attractive the fingerprint isn't going to go away. MS63Brown.

This coin is actually in a MS 62 BN holder. I can't for the life of me figure out why it was graded so low. Is it worth sending it in to PCGS to have regraded? If so do I crack it out of the slab? I don't guess it matters one way or the other because I won't sell it. I may end up putting it in my Dansco 7070. No matter what I think it was well worth the $23 that I paid for it.

I do think 62 is a little conservative for this piece. However, I don't think it's a gem either. It looks to me to have a fair amount of chatter just above the date. That coupled with the finger print and hit by the neck keeps it below a 65. From the images I think the technical grade is 63 with maybe a point bump for eye appeal. Personally I like the coin and would be happy to have it in my collection.

You certainly didn't overpay, but don't make the mistake of playing the crackout game with a coin in this price range. Just leave the coin in the ANACS holder and enjoy it.

How can a fingerprint affect the grade of a coin? I thought the grade was determined by how much wear and/or actual marks made into the coin (dings, bag marks, etc...). A print is just some oil on the coin. If a print can keep the grade down then shouldn't toning do the same? I've seen plenty of MS67-MS69 toned coins in TPG plastic.

Based upon the images, I would have guessed MS64BN or MS65BN, but of questionable color/originality.

Perhaps the coin was graded (only) MS62 due to the color. Or, maybe there is a detraction or two that does not show up well in the images (the lighter area on the Indian's cheek representing a touch of friction?).

Cwazzy, nice job with the pics.image

If it's a fresh print it may be just oil. But even the oil from your skin is fairly harmful to coins especially copper. It does contain salts and whatever other chemicals are on your skin when you handle the coin. If left it will etch itself into the coin especially in ideal conditions such as higher humidity.

One of the neat little secrets of collecting brown and red/brown IHC's is finding one in a tiny ANACS slab. We can debate till the cows come home on the originality of the color, but its a well struck and attractive appearing coin. Local dealers will scarf them up due it being attractive and the lack of prejudice of this group towards ANACS slabs. I'd keep it just where it is and enjoy the coin. Personally I like it very much. Over the years I have traded or sold several to dealers. Sometimes they are undergraded, another one of the secrets. image

I was going to say 65BN also. But for $23, that's a great buy.

I love the subtle color in the coin.

Mint state IHCs with this color scheme usually grade 63-64.

  • Beautiful!
  • Lovely piece with great eye appeal...nice pick-up.

Is this because the toning could be deemed questionable?

I ask because I love copper and want to learn as much as I can about it from the experts.

It looks much better than a 62 BN that ANACS gave it. I thought it was at least a MS64 BN.

I'd send it straight to PCGS, but it may get DNC and come back. It's a fine looking IHC for sure.
A little porous looking around "LIBERTY", but overall I like this coin, a lot !

wow...I would have said MS64. I'd keep it in the holder and drag it out when you go to buy something else. This could be a real money maker for you image

The price differance between a 62Bn and 64Bn is not that great. IMO I would leave the coin as it is. I have had coins with similiar colors get nuked by PCGS in the past, and pass by NGC. Though I/we have seen colors like this in PCGS holders.
