Storage/Display Question

Does anyone store thier cards on the walls? I saw a thread several months ago where someone had the cards actually on the wall of a room. If anyone knows what materials to use to do this let me know. If I can talk the wifey into it I may display mine this way. Would anyone happen to know if what you put on the wall to hold the cards comes off the wall easily or leaves holes in the wall?

Also, has anyone ever stored any of thier 800 count type boxes in one of those boxes cabinet type things?
I know that is a bad description but it has about 8 or 10 square holes to put 800 count boxes in. It looks like it is made out of the same material the box is made of. How sturdy are those things?

Thanks

I think they call those "cabinet" things "card houses" or something like that. I have a couple. They're nice if you've got a bunch of boxes you like to go through. It makes getting that box on the bottom of the stack so much easier.

I haven't really stress tested them though, but under normal conditions, they work just fine. If you stack them up 5 high, load all the slots with full 800 ct boxes, and decide to pull an entire row out from the bottom "card house", that might yield negative results.

I have a Pennzoni wall case, and it does the job. I own the 50 graded card case, although for some reason I think mine holds 55 ...

Thank Rich ! Do you think the "Houses" could be stacked on top of one another without negative results?

Those Pennzoni's are very attractive display cases, But I am looking more to get "cards out of the way" as my wife would say. And I would have to buy 20 of the Pennzoni's to make a dent in some of the graded cards I have.

    Thanks T_BANK

I saw a dealer with these stacked 5 high in the back of his store, but I don't know if they were full or empty.

I've had them stacked 2 high and fully loaded before and didn't encounter any problems. I probably wouldn't feel good about going higher.

I think you might be talking about my wall display.

The woodshop teacher in my school built the middle one for me. If you don't have the ability to build one yourself, you should seek out a woodshop/carpentry teacher in your local school to help. Often they like the idea of different "projects" to do in class with the students. I paid for the materials...and I gave him a little extra to thank him...about $125 all together. The case is solid wood..it will last a lifetime. The pennzoni cases seem to be made out of pressed wood.

    image

The smaller two are from pennzoni. I am not real happy with the Pennzoni ones though. I had to use velcro on the back of the card cases because they would fall out whenever you open the case door.

I use the curio cabinet in the corner to display mini-helmets etc. I use to display cards in it also.

Nice rookie card collection. I do not see a Namath in there, even though it wouldn't fit. You have 2 that I am chasing now in the Brown and Unitas. I also like the Sayers. Can I ask the grades on those?
  • My wife would kick me in the nuts if I did that to our basement.

Thanks. I love being able to display the cards instead of just putting them in boxes. Of course any time that I hear of a local break-in I get paranoid. No, Namath is one of the big money cards that has alluded me....I have don't want to buy below a 5-6 but I really don't want to spend the bucks needed to get one in that grade. The Brown is a SGC84, the Unitas is a SGC 84, and the Sayers is a SGC 86.

Even better...that is our family room! I used to have the basement as a sports room, but with 3 kids, it became a toy room, so we made our family room into one. My wife loves it actually, she says its like a sports bar without the smoke and drunks!

I bought a big square dowel and a little square dowel at Lowes. I glued them together and stuck them to the wall. I repeated the process a couple of times. I used three panelling nails through each dowel and into the stud. They are not supporting much weight. The cards go in and out very easily. None ever fell off of the wall. When I took them down, only three small holes remained. The holes could have easily been patched, but I tore out the wall.

I am a super cheapskate. I spent less than $20. I took it down as I am currently remodeling the room. I have painted the wood. It looks a lot better, but it is not back up on the wall yet. You just have to be careful about the light in the room.

I also use the card houses. I love them. They work best with the two-piece 800 count boxes. There is a fantastic seller on ebay for the card houses. I think the cost is less than they pay for shipping. I do not stack them, and I would not suggest it.

Arch, that is what I was looking for !

A few questions how do you stick it to the wall and is it easily removed.

How do you put the pieces of dowel together at, I cant tell from the pic.

    Thanks !

Speaking of display items, Does anyone have any idea were you can get a leather bound 3" or bigger d ring binder for a reasonable price?

    Some truly wonderful displays here.

themetalsign: Is that a full '56 set? And I love Thurman displayed next to his close pal Reggie image

I loved BigDaddyBowman's display when he posted it before. The thing that really makes it clear that he's a fan is the nice row of vintage photos along the top.
  • It's not quite a 56 set. I need 12 more cards to complete it. I'm close though.

Thurman and Reggie are my Favorites from my young years.

  • Graded card sleeves leaves me about a half inch of sleeve leftover. I then push pin them into the wall.

Pre-requisite #1 in my new home is having a HUGE basement with four big walls, no windows and a couple of closets for the extras.

I'm partial to this company's display case for cards because it has a glass door which they say will provide 97% UV protection.

Not sure if this is a sales pitch or truly important in the house?

all that he did was make some rails. you would need a router to make a groove on each end so that the holders just slide right in. should be pretty easy. it might take a bit to get a gig set up but once you do all you do is run piece after piece through. then you just have to mount them level on the wall.

How about the pink background. Maybe that was part of the compromise with the wife. You can hang your cards all over the wall, I get to pick the background color.

It probably motivates him to fill in the holes in his set quicker.

I'm not so sure he used a router on that, I beleive I remmeber reading in the old thread that the rails were made from chrome.

Its wood with chrome trim. I am assuming since I didnt have time to read it carefully, is that the trim is wider than the wood which allows removal of the cards. You could go with only wood and use a router to do the same thing. Some nice cherry wood with a great stain would look sweet.

Thats my plan, to get some kind of dark wood like cherry or mahoghany.
I may just have to go to Home Depot and look around. The problem comes is ; will the wife let me put the holes in the walls?
    image

  • Do it when she's not there and tell her it's a special adhesive and it's called screw glue. Can't see the holes if they're covered. And plus once you have confirmation it's ok to put them on the wall then take full advantage of her kindness. lol
  • then after that bye her a diamond...lol
