Crosby VIII, 30, Breen 1117 variety, one of just 17 known in all grades.
This piece is one of the series of interesting and very rare speculative patterns for US coinage.
The obverse is similar in design to the far more common 1787 Immunis Columbia issue which followed, though with some subtle differences in the seated figure and the prior use of IMMUNE in place of IMMUNIS.
The obverse legend translates as either 'America immune from the troubles of the world', or 'America immune from taxation' depending on your perspective (and level of cynicism). We favor the latter translation, but would be delighted to be proven wrong by someone who knows better.
The reverse is the common Nova Constellatio, Pointed Rays type designated by Crosby as (in that series) obverse 2.
Edited to add: I was referring to the 1785 Immune Columbia, not to the cast member of "Planet of the Apes" or to the cars. Can't be too careful these days!
I forget the actress' name, maybe it was Linda Harrison. (IMDB.COM would have it.) She was Charleton Heston's sidekick in the original Planet of the Apes. (BTW, I didn't post her as a BABE but just as another Nova that wasn't a Chevy.)
Comments
I'd post one if I had one.
