As I recall, this is how the description "The Hoppy of Kings" came about. Noble Greeks and Romans collected coins for there artistic value.

I remember some of the prescribed readings for English Literature classes included classics like Beowuf, The Hounds of the Baskervilles, Macbeth etc. I couldn't figure out why study these archaic literary classics. But then it dawned upon me that these are "classics" because the characthers protrayed display the same behaviors as modern man. If modern man likes to hoard and collect, then he learned it from his ancestors. So there is no doubt in my mind that early phoenicians, greeks and romans hoarded precious possessions, including coins.
