Feedback appreciated: A very cool Battle Creek -reverse toner DPL

This is a great example of a very impressive reverse-toned Proof-like Morgan from the Battle Creek collection.
It sure seems like a very image example.image

You sure spend an inordinate amount of time singing the praises of these coins. Exactly who are you trying to convince? Yourself?

  • Very nice coin...looks to be graded conservatively also. I like it a lot!

Just going from those pics, that coin looks to me like an average 64 with very borderline mirrors for a DPL designation and just so-so color on the reverse. Maybe it looks a lot better in person?

It's an attractive coin, but nothing special. I'd rather have more color on less mirrored surfaces. That's just one of the very many ho-hum coins to come out of the BC hoard. And yes, it's a hoard, not a pedigree or collection. Maybe hoard isn't even the correct term.

Here's another BC Morgan on Teletrade tonight. In the interest of full disclosure, I don't own this coin and won't be bidding on it. Any thoughts on it? I'll post my comments on it after the auction ends.

I have seen firsthand that some of the grading on these NGC graded "hoard" coins like Binion and Battle Creek has been very erratic to say the least, some coins undergraded by as much as 2 points and some way overgraded and some have star designations that make no sense whatsoever to me.

I have 2 Morgans with the Binion pedigree and the coin graded a 63 is no question a better coin in every respect then the one graded a 65. If you put them side by side it's laughable.

Must be something wrong with the coin, the saturation isn't tweaked. I'd stay away!

While I appreciate Dizzy's enthusiasm for BC's, I have to say it does make me wince from time to time. The BC dpl he is advocating is lot # 254 from BC 5. The majority of BC coins sold at BC 5 were the sweepings of the BC collection (not quite the dregs, but including some of that too). This coin, lot 254, in hand is, IMO, thoroughly uninspiring. There were 3 dpl's in BC 5, lots 254 (reverse), 255 (obverse), and 256 (reverse). In my catalogue (SEE ya' can't do this with the auction website page... well actually you can, but it takes more work) I marked them as, "Blah, OK, OK". I bought lot 256, because the little bit of toning looked nice (kind of watery) on the mirrors and the price was right. Personally, while I think 256 is pretty I would not give it a star. I did not bid on lot 254 period as it did zippo for me.

The other BC linked by Dragon definitely looks like something that would have been unloaded at BC 5. I CERTAINLY would not have given it the star.

Here are a couple images of lot 256, the coin I won, which, IMO looked a heck of a lot better than the one Dizzy is refering to, but as mentioned I still wouldn't give it a star. The first image is a luster shot and the second is a color shot.

For the record, I image the Battle Creeks and the pedigree, as mystical as it may be. Some of the coins are ok, some are image and some are just plain dazzling. I only have one example so I don't think I can be labeled as biased. The coins will grow in popularity more and more over time without a doubt in my opinion, and the top 10% of the BC coins are within the top 1% of the best toned Morgans in the hobby.image

I was hoping you'd post that one FHG. A fun coin. As you mentioned, it was a PL not a DPL. IMO the single best reverse toner of the BC's was a PL coin, BC 1 lot 1300.

<< <i>Some of the coins are ok, some are image and some are just plain dazzling. >>

Dizzy, let's not forget that a good chunk, say 400 to 500 out of 1400, are just, well, I wouldn't call them trash, but let's say your basic Morgan... MS60 to 63 white widgets. There is NO way they should have been included under the BC heading.

Toned DMPL Morgans are always tops on my list. That 1886 Battle Creek reverse toner sure is showing some nice color against those mirrors.

IMO, this coin got the star not for the color but for the lovely frost on Liberty's cheek. Premium for a 64 [Not that I know Jack Schitt about Morgans.]

The thing that bothers me is that it's not known where they came from, which precludes it from being a "collection." It also precludes it from being a "pedigree." How can coins ostensibly from unopened bags be a collection when the previous owner never set eyes on them? It's a submission, that's all. If they called it the "Battle Creek Submission," much of the controversy would go away.
