Feedback appreciated: A very cool Battle Creek -reverse toner DPL

This is a great example of a very impressive reverse-toned Proof-like Morgan from the Battle Creek collection.
It sure seems like a very
example.

<< <i>Looks OK, photography better than most. >>
Agreed. I'd like to see Michael or you image one of the garish ones.

<< <i>Just going from those pics, that coin looks to me like an average 64 with very borderline mirrors for a DPL designation and just so-so color on the reverse. Maybe it looks a lot better in person? >>

<< <i>Here's another BC Morgan on Teletrade tonight. In the interest of full disclosure, I don't own this coin and won't be bidding on it. Any thoughts on it? I'll post my comments on it after the auction ends.

I think NGC hands out that dumbass star designation on many coins that don't deserve it.
Albeit a nice example of a toned Morgan, I still don't see it
breaking a genetic pedigree barrier.

Now bite your tongue, mister! Check out this (non-BC) NGC star toned beauty. I guess it must really be stunning in hand.
<< <i>You sure spend an inordinate amount of time singing the praises of these coins. Exactly who are you trying to convince? Yourself?

Then I'll know they're something special.

Well Russ, at least you have thoughts regarding the BC's... that's a start, at least.
Would you keep one in your collection if I bought one for you for Christmas?
<< <i>That bc morgan on teletrade is a freakin' joke. It doesn't deserve a star, and did you see that ginormous rim hit on the obverse side!!!
I have seen firsthand that some of the grading on these NGC graded "hoard" coins like Binion and Battle Creek has been very erratic to say the least, some coins undergraded by as much as 2 points and some way overgraded and some have star designations that make no sense whatsoever to me.
I have 2 Morgans with the Binion pedigree and the coin graded a 63 is no question a better coin in every respect then the one graded a 65. If you put them side by side it's laughable.

The other BC linked by Dragon definitely looks like something that would have been unloaded at BC 5. I CERTAINLY would not have given it the star.
Here are a couple images of lot 256, the coin I won, which, IMO looked a heck of a lot better than the one Dizzy is refering to, but as mentioned I still wouldn't give it a star. The first image is a luster shot and the second is a color shot.

I know, I know, that's why I had to set the record straight once and for all.

Dizzy, let's not forget that a good chunk, say 400 to 500 out of 1400, are just, well, I wouldn't call them trash, but let's say your basic Morgan... MS60 to 63 white widgets. There is NO way they should have been included under the BC heading.

<< <i>I was hoping you'd post that one FHG. A fun coin. As you mentioned, it was a PL not a DPL. IMO the single best reverse toner of the BC's was a PL coin, BC 1 lot 1300.

Sy, your posts (as well as Sunnywood's and coingame2000's) on the Battle Creek subject, are always appreciated and contain valueable substance.

Mystical regarding the sequence of events as to the complete provenance of this collection... Are you high?
Have you been around long enough to make a statment like that with any conviction or substance, or just a wild guess from looking at a few online pics here and there?

Just how big does an obverse rim dent have to be, for the coin not to be an NGC-MS65* grade?

First of all, what's a Morgan dollar???
Now, to answer your question seriously... Yes, I can make that statement with conviction and substance. But of course it's JMWO.
<< <i>For the most part I can see my enthusiasm regarding Battle Creeks falls on deaf ears (or at least uninterested ears) here on the forum. I will cease from creating threads on these coins, but, I will certainly reply to any threads that pertain to them. Ding, dong the 'witch' is dead.
The thing that bothers me is that it's not known where they came from, which precludes it from being a "collection." It also precludes it from being a "pedigree." How can coins ostensibly from unopened bags be a collection when the previous owner never set eyes on them? It's a submission, that's all. If they called it the "Battle Creek Submission," much of the controversy would go away.
