What do you do with the extra cards?

I just recently read the thread on the self sustaining collection and found it very interesting. I have one of my own for all of you. I have six player sets that have cards in the dreaded 80's and 90's junk era. I have been buying up cheap boxes from those years looking for that one or two cards that could be graded for my sets. I now have boxes and boxes of these cards and I don't know what to do with them. I have pulled all the stars and semi stars out and some are worthy of grading. My question is: do you think it would be worth it to get these graded for a possible quick turn? and what do you do with the rest of the cards. I guess burning them or donating them are options but looking for opinions.

  • How about listing some of the boxes of cards you have. Offering them to members here that build player sets that might be very interested in some oddball stuff. I buy on Ebaay, but I hate paying $2 - 3.00 shipping for a .59cent card. I bought boxes of 1982 and 1983 fleer stickers looking for the players I need, only to find PSA 10's from 4SC for $3.00 to $6.00. Just a thought.

For truckloads of my extras I usually give them to kids and hope they'll
catch the fever or I donate them to the Salvation Army for underprivilidged kids
and also to childrens hospitals & Vet hospitals.
Junk to us may be treasure to someone else...jay

Definitely don't burn the extras; some kids don't care if they're junk. Jay listed some good ideas, and you can take a tax write-off for the cards' value for donating to those places. I also recently gave a bunch of mid-grade old cards to my wife for a charity auction, and they sold for way more than I expected. I guess people feel generous at those events. I've also heard of people giving them away at Halloween, and they said the kids were thrilled with them.

Right now I am putting together football cards for kids at the Leukemia Lymphoma Society's Christmas event. Last year I did it too. It makes you feel great. The only problem I had is I am a collector of football from the 60's to now but most (90%) of my cards are from 1999 and before. I gave each child 100 cards with stars and everything. Their parents were saying WOW, I remember him but the kids were not recognizing many of the players. So, this year I bought huge collections on Ebay and I am splitting them up right now. So, if anyone wants to add football cards from 2000 on up to this please PM me. The event is held on December 21st. Anything you can donate would be appreciated.
