Ripken Minor League Card Fakes--writer looking for info

Hello,

I'm working on an article for SCD about Cal Ripken minor league cards that have been
counterfeited.

I visited the fairly new website Ripkenintheminors.com and it said that two of the
four Ripken minor league cards had been faked on occasion:

The 1980 WBTV Charlotte O's and the 1981 WTF Rochester card.

Does anyone have any info about the 1980 Charlotte O's Police Ripken or
his 1981 TCMA Rochester card?

Please feel free to email me at kozpro20@hotmail.com if you have info related to this topic.
And, if you have any side by side and/or close-up pics of the authentic vs. counterfeit cards in question that you
could send my way that would be most appreciated. The deadline for interviews is December 9th.

Thanks again to all who have assisted with my past articles --Doug
Enjoy the hobby.

ripkenintheminors is a poster here and owner of the site. He'll give you about any info you need.

Here's the hammer for the 1980 WBTV set I had posted about earlier. Frankly I thought it was going to go for a good $1200 or so. I'm sure I'll end up regretting not going after it.

    $695 for WBTV set.
  • Doug,

You should add the Mcgwire Modesto Chong minor league issue to the article of counterfited minor league issues.

I live near Modesto and know the card shop that purchased the excess sets from the Modesto A's. There were only 1500 corrected versions produced and 500 error sets.

I would guess PSA has graded many more than the original 1500

That set should've sold for twice that amount, and that's putting it lightly. That set has "grade me" written all over it. The person who bought that set got a major steal. That entire set sold for less than I've seen single Ripken counterfeits sell for. I would've made a run but I'm content with my SGC 84 and the remainder of my set. Not making guarantees but I hope for solid grades when I send the remainder of the set for grading.

Should've mentioned that me and Doug have been communicating through the e-mail. Rocky Landsverk talked with me around the time that Ripken in the Minors went live. Rocky had a lot of interest then and said that he would be interested in doing an article once the site was up and running. With the HOF ballot coming out this past Monday, I decided that the site was ready enough for the word to get out. Rocky asked Doug to do the article and has been doing a great job. A very special guest that has been so vital to the development of the site is also joining the interview efforts.
  • Still amazed at the final sell price, I looked back at that set auction. I know that pictures were added, but does adding pictures reset the counter at the bottom of the page? When I checked the auction page this morning I was visitor number 36. In comparison, the other O's Ripken auction was well over 100 hits with a good amount of time remaining.
